Just a few pictures I took at SAAC 38. A few weeks ago I was at the end of three months of working on my 66 Shelby at my Mom's in SoCal getting it ready to sell. Because I was unaware that SAAC 38 was going to be just 20 miles from my Mom's I drove my GT40 home to Idaho only to have to return a week later to attend the meet and try and sell the Shelby.
While walking around the paddock I ran into a blue GT40 in one of the garages I snapped a few pictures then without really looking I sat down and started talking to the gentleman sitting close by. To my surprise with just his voice I figured out this nice man was Bob Bondurant. His are the legs you see in the first picture.
The next three are of an engine I didn't recognize at the Shelby display. It's a Hemi headed small block Ford. The valves and ports are huge. Might make an interesting GT40 engine.
Then there is the beautiful polished Kirkham Cobra Coup. OMG if it were mine it would be mess in a week, that's what happens when you don't stop driving something.
I did get to do a few parade laps in the Shelby. The speed limit was 55 mph. At that speed the car feels like it's going to roll down the banked turns, very scarey. Not that I broke any rules but at something a smig higher it was a lot more fun. At 7000 rpm the car pulled much better then I remembered.
Im glad Im not in the used parts market as you can see HiPo parts are a bit pricy. Yes that's $9500 for just a bar block.
Then there was the two races on Friday where Bob drove his GT40 as the pace car. It was nice talking to him and he gave an interesting interview at the Friday night dinner talking about his career.
Another interesting interview was with Pete Brock the man that designed the cool aero trailer that has a full belly pan and of course the Cobra Coupe. He has a new book coming out that talks about the time he spent being the youngest car designer GM ever hired at 19. At the time the big 4 had pulled out of racing and GM was going to kill the Corvette. One of the design studio manager created a "secret" group were Pete designed the 63 Sting Ray. He said at first the car couldn't even have the names Corvette or Chevrolet. That is until sales went very well and GM changed their corporate minds.
The meet was a lot of fun I just wish I had sold the Shelby.
