SouthernGT #72

Well then I guess it's time for me to start a build log. For those that haven't already met me I'm James I'm 21 and live down in Suffolk. I've joined my local enthusiasts club and it's great - met some great people already.
I picked my chassis up about a month and a bit ago now. Haven't touched it yet sadly finishing off my current project car and then to build a workshop for the GT40. So far I've built a hefty set of trestles up for it. And planning on hitting the round running jan/Feb time With panneling. I'll attach a few pics of what I'm building now for those that are interested a bmw e30. It's basically an e30 transplanted onto an e36 328i sport running gear... With some tasteful mods and body kit. All works including paint I've done myself can't wait to finish it now.

Well it's only been a year. But have finally been able to start. Started pulling apart a un1. Managed to get that Completly stripped down and it's currently awaiting cerakoting. Had my adapter plate done as a reference for colour. I've ended up going for gun mental grey! On its return I'm fitting the quaife dif and the long 5th gear, new bearings and gaskets then sitting it on a pallet for about 3 years I reckon hahaha. I've also made a start on the panneling incredibly monotonous however the pannel set from southern/ak is fairly on point. Does definitely help not fitting floor pan first as otherwise doing the pannels in the lower Footwell is a mission. Both tanks fitted loosely. Seem to have a slight issue with a chassis stud which will end up hitting the breather outlet when bolted up. So will have to trim the stud with to suit. Not sure if this is a common occurance. What else? Off to America with work so intending on bringing back a set of Ali heads from summit. Progress is progress even though its taken a year. I've not been idle over the last year however. I've mostly been preoccupied building a garage for the 40.

Well... Still been pottering on. Making good progress with the paneling albiet it's slow going. But all looks well. Plan going forward. Finish off the panel work. And begin designing and getting the loom in the car.

Well still pootling on.... Paneling however is nearly complete. Just waiting on a few days of nice weather and get it painted. Gearbox nearly there too! Managed to get the selector assembly installed the other day with a brand new cross shaft and seals. Definitely a two person job at times. I am however very sick of marking drilling deburring and filing. Looking forward to do anything but managed to get my hands on a full set of part worn avons in absolutely fantastic condition. Few quid saved there.

pictures attached.

Looking great James.
I hope you’ve made a few of the panels with rivnuts and removable in order to get access into front bulkhead, sills etc

all the best, and keep ticking the boxes:)
Morten
Thanks Morten, as it stands the top panel that pedal box sits on is removable, as are the rear "Triangle bits" - using the technical terms now haha. and the usual SGT access points of course. any further panels you can recommend? Before they get Sikaflexed on. I will live to regret my spacing. Im a man of continuity and throughout the car used 40mm spacing, as have i for the pilot holes for the removable panels rivnuts. least it looks correct above all else. Current goal is engine block and gearbox in for my Christmas holiday so i can get exhaust made up. Then body on early new year, before i go abroad with work and then all progress stops for a couple years. The paneling is incredibly monotonous so looking forward to change of pace.

I’ll send you a few photos off panels that will benefit from being removable making your build life easier.

Some man hours has gone in over the last month or so.... However the car is now paneled, managed to get steering column and rack in aswell. Radiator is next on the list along with pedals. Onwards and upwards.
