Steering rack too slow (lock to lock)

Hello everyone, I would like to make the steering faster (currently 4 turns from lock to lock), and that makes the car very clumsy in my opinion. i carry a ford granada address in case this end helps, bought from southerngt.

Does anyone know or can you recommend what to do?

Does anyone know if the steering quickener is ok?

Thank you!

That quickener is generally used in cars with power steering. A 2:1 ratio would increase your steering effort exponentially!
Measure up your rack and check in with places like Speedway Motors and others to see if you can get a more tolerable 3 turn rack.

No recommendation for you, but can attest to how much a quicker ratio contributes to nimble control at the track. As Randy alluded to, I had to add an EPAS setup to my project (Porsche 911/930 center-steer manual rack), which is about 1.5 turns L-to-L (but do have the limits narrowed a small amount) due to old-man shoulders.

Which steering rack do you have? Ford? Sierra? Escort? Granada? RHD or LHD?
You can get quick ratio racks or kits from several sources.

Thank you. I have a Ford Granada LHD steering rack. When I started with the project I bought a Ford escort LHD steering rack (from burtonpower, the same that you mentioned), but I did not work because the southerngt chassis has a different mounting points to attach the steering rack.

Which steering rack do you have?

2 possible solutions.
Check with Mick at SGT to find out which steering rack they supply so you can get a rack with the same fittings.
OR
Fabricate from sheet steel and weld brackets on the new rack which are the same as the original ones or cut the brackets off the original rack. It may be best to make new brackets then the original rack can be sold.

Thank you Mike!

I spoke when I ordered the steering rack to get a quicker one but Mick said that it is not possible to get a quicker one (I do not know why). So I will try to go to the rute that you indicate (weld new brackets).

Anyone have more suggestions?

Thank you all

Over the many years I have had requests to fit " quick racks " to these cars, and where the customer has insisted this has been done, but on each occasion when the owner got to drive the car he quickly reverted to the original. Unless you are very experienced I am sure you will no doubt do the same !

Thanks for sharing your experience. So you think that 4 turns from lock to lock is not excessive?

Frank, as always, your experience is invaluable. Can you share what it was that caused the buyer's remorse on the quicker rack? Was it the increased effort, sensitivity at speed, feel, etc?
