Steering shaft

On a SPF and I assume an original 40 too, what retains the steering wheel splined shaft in the column? I want to remove but don’t want to go on an unnessary disassembly hunt. Thanks for any help.

It's been awhile, but I think the shaft just slides out of the column after unbolting the u joint.

Thanks Dave, but there has to be some type of retaining collar or detent to limit fore and aft movement of the shaft in the column. Just can’t see it from a crouched position. Trying to avoid crawling on my back down the foot well. I thought the Europa was hard to work on!

You are right Mark. I located post I made from 9 years ago about steering column issue. As photo shows when you disconnect the u joint, retaining collar and spring will fall out. As indicated in post check bracket for cracks. I found access easiest thru panel in front compartment. I have an S1 Europa also so know what you mean.

Thought I would inform SPF owners of an issue I had with my steering column. The column to dash support bracket broke on my car. If you check the pictures you'll notice the bracket has notches cut in the sheet metal to make bends. These are the stress points that broke. Fortunately I had some warning and was able to get the car to a safe location before it broke completely.
I fabricated a new bracket with no bends and brazed it to the column. I also reinforced a similar weak point at the rear of the column. I do some track days with semi slicks and the car has over 20,000 miles so that...

FWIW, current production SPF brackets are welded in the fold notches of the brackets so cracking issue is no longer a concern.
