Original Rear Body Restraint "dog leash" question

For those that have either seen an original car with the leather rear body restraint "dog leash" which is bolted to the rear bodywork, or have recreated something similar, where does the leather restraint fall when the body is closed. I want to recreate something similar but it looks to me like when you close the body, the strap will fall right across the half shaft area.

Any insight would be helpful from those that have one or have seen one of the originals being used.

On my DAX (now sold) I used dogleads made of stainless cable

Only photos I can locate are attached and as the rear clip was closed they just looped behind the suspension…….never touched anything spinning!
