Steering wheel install questions

Dave - I welded mine in place and it didn't melt.

Try this stuff, heat sink putty.

Any problem welding the other end of the steel adapter? I can cut 1/2" off the adapter and it will sit flush with the column. I can then run a bead around the end of the shaft and grind it smooth. In picture below: If I get the steering shaft even with the end of adapter, any issue with just welding this end?
