My GT40 has a strap made of 1/8" OD stainless cable with two lugs crimped on the ends. I used only one on one side. It is located much like the ones on the real car above. When not in use, clip closed, it just sorta folds back on itself. Since it is stainless and without any coatings on it there is nothing to burn if it gets close to the exaust. It is also not long enough to get into the suspension as it travels.
Otherwise this method is reliable, lightweight, cheap, not complicated, and isn't prone to failure. Perfect!
