Universal joint "phase"

Not sure to describe it as "phase" but don't know what else to call it.
In a steering column, should universal joints line up in any particular way?
Thanks
Simon

Simon,
90 deg. out of 'phase'. Otherwise you will have variable rates of rotational output relative to the input if there is any angular change at the UJ. Connect them up loosely 'in phase' and you can feel the lumpiness as you turn the wheel.

Theoretically yes, to get uniform through-speed, but that would require the in and out axis to be parallel.

Bottom line: Don't worry about it. It doesn't reduce the joint life and the speed variation is too small to notice.
