But apart from the “spider” which holds the lifters in place, what is the steel contraption on the lifter? See puc

Looks like the Alignment Bracket that keeps the roller lifters properly oriented to the rotation of the cam…
Many engines use steel “dog bones” to accomplish the same thing..

It’s got the “dog bones” underneath, I’m confused as to why this is fitted as well…

Larry - Those are aftermarket Tie-Bar Roller Lifters. I have never seen a Tie-Bar setup from an OEM like Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, et al...

Understood, Randy. (I've never seen an OEM "Tie-Bar setup" either!)
'Only intent was to show the type of 'system I (and I'd bet most of us!) have always used / been familiar with as opposed to Ford's OEM setup. ;-)

Those plastic parts are factory 5.0L roller block "dog bonnes" version from the 90's.
Some say they are better than the steel one.
But you can't have both !!!! You must chose Steel or plastic

A plastic guide to keep the lifter from going sideways and wiping a cam. Hmmm. What could go wrong.

That's almost as awesome as the plastic timing gears they used that always eventually shed the plastic and retard the cam until the exhaust valves smack the pistons.

Upon closer inspection, I see this is a substitute for the “dog bones” and yes, cheaply cheapy.
it’s a ‘95 roller block, I’ve only every had experience of early 302s before
