There are several ways of enjoying a work of art ! You can go to a museum and look at a masterpiece, you can get out your cheque book and buy it to hang on your wall as a trophy, you can buy a print and do the same, you could even get out paints and canvas and create your own, or you can buy the jigsaw puzzle, have the fun of putting it together and then view the picture when finished with greater satisfaction . You can even take it all apart and do it all again as many times as you like! The need to be creative is in all of us, the ability to do so is debatable. There are of course people who buy art as a status symbal, others simply to make a profit, others who must have the latest "in thing" or toy, some have ambitions above their ability and other above their finances. We all have dreams ! There is an analogy with our cars as well, and we see it sometime on the Forum. Reading Lynns comments on the Superformance thread, yes you could go out and buy a finished GT40, or take the factory advice and buy a model, but I think there are far more artists in our group than you think, guys who want to posses their own individual piece of art, but who also want to create that possession for themselves, whether by their own hands or by commissioning it to someone who can work with them for the day they put in the last piece and stand back with much greater satisfaction than ever they will get by writing out a big cheque.
