wosperformance gear reduction starter overheating

DRB GT-40 , Roush 427IR G50-03 Transaxle. Starter is new. Starts cold instantly ( super fast cranking) . After driving for fifteen or twenty minutes , shut down engine. When restarting right after shutdown , Starter will barely crank. Wait five minutes or so and it cranks like when cold starting . Starter feels warm (hot) so wrapped it with heat shield material. Same issue. Appreciate any thoughts or similar experiences?

always disconnect ground if working on the engine . Good visual pick up. Not related to the overheated starter, thanks for the response though

The first thing I thought of was bad or poor ground. That still stands.. Poor grounding increases the current draw of the starter and that, alone, can cause the starter to get very hot. As a test, I have connected a battery jumper cable from the negative post of the battery directly to the starter housing..
You can pick up an inductive current meter for cheap on Amazon or your local parts house. You can place that over the positive cable to see how many amps your starter is drawing.
