ZF transaxle ?

I am new to the forum having recently sold my cobra and intending to build a GT40. Among many others, my question is what can I expect to pay for a ZF transaxle? Should I expect to have it rebuilt after getting it? I intend to replicate the #2 car that won Lemans. With this end I intend to use an Aluminum 427 block and build it to match the #2 car as close as possible. I have seen ZF transaxles in the 10-12000 range. Is this what I should expect to pay? Any insight into this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jeff

Jeff,
You may want to talk to a Ted Baird. He is building a MKII and knows every inch of a GT40 MKII. The original car used a T44 trans axle and Ted can tell you where to get one.

Welcome Jeff.

There are some ZF alternatives in work here on the forum. One is much more stout and is outwardly identical to the ZF. I'll do a search and see what I can find to send to you.

Cheers

I would encourage you to go back and read the long list of comments on the forum regarding transaxles. They're very informative to the discerning eye. I don't understand transaxles like I do the engine discussions so I've deferred to the expertise of those who really know their transaxle stuff. While doing so, I keep the thought in mind "how will service on this transaxle look down the road when I need it"? If you're like me, you won't be thinking about the perfect shift when you're flat out at 7000 RPMs coming up on the next corner. If I need help with a transaxle that I've buggered, I will want to be able to receive it from an organization with a customer oriented attitude that wants a long-term relationship. Just my two cents worth.

Have a good weekend-
Steve
