SLC 001 Build

Yes. It is the Manex unit Will and I have been working with for a few years now. I include a few pictures from various points in time for reference.

I was sad to hear Mr ''Momo'' Moretti had passed, since I was old enough to know anything about a car (for my generation at least) a Momo wheel was ''the'' wheel to have. In honor of my favorite wheel man, I write this post.

The steering column in my car was originally designed to have a larger steering wheel attached to it with a larger guy attached to that ham fisting a large luxury automobile through mid town traffic day after day. In my case at I not only desired a wheel more fitting the sportiness of it's surroundings but as I am apt to do I went a little extreme. After much searching, I found the wheel I liked and that fit the dash curvature best was a little Momo race wheel. I've long desired to use an alcantera covered race wheel in some car some day. Well that day has arrived, grazie Mr. Moretti.

After fitting the wheel to the car I found two things. First, that although I'm sure it works fine with a normal sized steering wheel the column bezel looked just massive in comparison to the demure Momo. Second, the windshield wiper stalk obstructed the center pod on the dash a little too much and again was made to look a bit large in comparison to the wheel.

With these challenges before me I once again decided to bite off more than I could chew and dove head first into my first use of clay in designing a part. Good thing it was a simple part. :smash:

Thanks for the complements Guys.

Ahhh Beer..... the currency of car builders the world over :chug:

Actually there are already a few owners out there demanding access to this prototype. I would need to pull a mold off the now finished version in order to produce a part worthy of distribution. If there is enough demand I may go ahead and git 'er done.

If any of you are interested - PM or better yet send me an email and I'll get back to you.
Thanks

Stay tuned :computer:

more room for your knees getting in and out plus that should give you better range of tilt? What is the list Mesa price in USD$?

Rob -

You never cease to amaze me! The new cowl and wheel look fantastic. Momo wheels are the best - I had one in my Esprit and loved it. Any issues with leg clearance under the Momo? The stock wheel has the flattened bottom - at least the one on my SLC does. I had assumed that was to allow more clearance but maybe not. If you decide to produce the cowl parts let me know...dare I say this is a case where smaller is better.....

Rob today is the first time I have seen your build log, Don't know HOW I missed this one ????
I don't know that to say, I am speechless. The work you have done, Unfricking believable

I be watching for the Grand Finally.
Cheers,

Grant,
Rob has spent years and tears accomplishing the fantastic (and wild), sometimes almost
impossible tasks that he tackled. Always with a super result. Great job Rob!

Thanks Grant, like Jack says ..... years and tears.

After waits for pieces of the puzzle to fall into place, seem like the dam broke over here .... everything comes at once! Among other items, I finally have my wing mount produced in aluminum and it's a marked improvement over the wood version :) Stunning to look at I must say, kind of like looking at a light weight Ducati footpeg bracket. Currently working to precisely locate the decklid on the mount in order to locate, align and bond the fabricated nut plates to the decklid. Frikken time consuming to say the least, but it will be a sweet victory when I get to open the deck lid and wing in one motion.

Dave - In my car the steering column is moved up as far as it will go, cutting the factory spacers to about .250. With my combination of components (mainly to be able to view the dash readouts through the small steering wheel) I wanted the wheel as far north as it would go, a side effect is that there are zero concerns about wheel to leg clearance and no need for a flat steering wheel. YMMV.

Mesa:

I have looked through this entire thread and I have not seen how you will direct air from outside the car into and through the two front-mounted air conditioning condensers.

How do you plan to do that? Do you have any diagrams or photos to accompany your explanation (please!)?

Thanks!

Bassanio et Portia :)

The manner in which the tank would be attached to the chassis has always been a question. In the process of installing the firewall the answer of how and where to locate the brackets came to me like a Homer Simpson epiphany (DOH!). Easy access to the fasteners and direct drop in/lift out installation is the result, the leading edge mount bracket shares the same fasteners as the 45 degree fuel tank cover. That cardboard triangle represents the fuel 'swirl' tank, now begins the mission of finding a fuel pump and filter small enough to sit on top of the tank and under the cover.

(On a separate note: Sorry Bassanio I don't have what you are requesting)

Rob -

Nice looking tank - did you start from scratch or use the supplied tank as a base? My tank is in the process of being modified right now. I was wondering if you'll be using a grommet between the fuel filler hose and the aluminum sheet it passes through? Even though there "shouldn't" be much movement there I'd be concerned about small vibrations over time damaging the hose.

Dave L

The tank is a variation of the original design being full width with the top chopped off, (about 18 gallons). The cables will pass over the top of the tank and pass through the wall near the fuel filler hose. All pass through holes will eventually get rubber 'protection'.
