Greg’s RF GT40 Build

Hi everyone. I have just commenced my Roaring Forties project and thought I would share my progress, experiences, issues and successes along the way.
Hopefully I will also receive comments, suggestions and recommendations along the way from the much more experienced members.
I built a DRB Cobra some 30 years ago and greatly enjoyed the challenges and great satisfaction on completing and registering the vehicle. In many ways the build was almost more enjoyable than driving.
My chassis is currently in production and I have attached some images of the very early stages.

Progress update on my RF build. Chassis is complete, powder coated and the aluminium panels fitted. Unfortunately the body sections are a bit delayed so my thoughts have moved to engine and colour.
I have decided on a 302 Windsor and it was going to be a Blueprint however I now have the option of a Ford performance unit as well although a bit more expensive. Keeping in mind they boy need to be shipped to Australia. Any thoughts?

The rivet pattern seems to be very widely spaced. Are the aluminum panels used as stressed members?

Very timely build thread. I’m thinking about building one based in Tassie. I like the idea that I’d be working with a manufacturer who is building for Aussie regs.

Hi Richard,

RF have recently completed all the engineering tests required to allow registration in all states. This is very important for me as building any individually constructed vehicle it is a lot of work and money to not ending up registering it.

Bonus for me is the factory is an hour away and I can drop in anytime.

Seems a long time since I have posted. My chassis was finished back in August but I have still been waiting on my body which was significantly delayed but almost ready and I am visiting the factory during the coming week to take a look.

In the meantime I have fitted out my workshop, purchased my engine and had my 8 stack delivered last week.

I decided on the Blueprint 302 long motor as it was already available via an importer in Australia and not far from where I live.

I was originally planning on a Speedmaster 8 stack manifold but following some purchasing challenges and reading some not so positive reviews, I discovered a manufacturer here in Melbourne. I picked it up on Friday and very happy with the look and quality of the build. As you can see in the attached photo's, they have added a collection chamber and plumbed individual lines from each throttle inlet to give a very good MAP signal rather than through the common chamber.

Hoping to get my hands dirty with earnest very soon and will post progress.

Keep posting Greg. I’ve been around the world and have come back to RF. I like that the chassis looks closer to the original than other Aussie options. How have RF been to deal with?

Hi Richard, RF have been very easy to deal with and their factory is only an hour away so I drop in regularly. The only issue I have had is the delay in getting the body made but it is almost ready now per the attached pictures.

Cant go wrong with EFIhardware parts. Really good quality and excellent to deal with.

To the brains trust, I have a question regarding my 8 stack manifold fuel rails. I was expecting to see the fuel rails set up to allow a return line back to the tank but it doesn't seem to be configured that way.

In the photos you can see the back end has a temporary red cap at the end of each rail but at the front one side is a dead end while the other has a screwed plug.

When I built my cobra years ago the fuel entered the rail at one end, crossed over to the 2nd rail at the back and then exited for return to the tank at the front of the 2nd rail giving a full loop.

If it is set up as a dead head system I am concerned about vapor lock.

am I missing something here?

The return loop may be possible but you need a pressure regulator at the end of the two rails to maintain the injection pressure on your injectors.
By the way, what size of injector is currently mounted ?

The injectors are 347cc EV14 1/2 height. They came as part of the manifold kit.
I will call the supplier tomorrow to question the fuel rails. Just not what I was expecting to see.

Many OEM EFI installations are deadhead to the rails. I’ve not heard of any vaporlock issues with EFI systems in general as they purge rather quickly with the higher EFI pressures.
