Ok guys,
here's the scoop on what happened to my Gear box. I have an 016 3U box. I believe that it has in ecess of 100,000 miles on it. I put it in without any work being done to it. While at Run & Gun on the drag race portion of the compitition I pulled a hole shot at 6,000RPM and when I went to back up to the starting line it would not go into reverse. I then put it in second and drove to the pits. I put it on the trailer and brought it home. My trans guy took it apart and discovered what happened. The mid section of the trans that houses the rear main shaft bearing failed.
It is made of cast iron and it had alot of pourosity in the area around the main bearing collar. This piece cracked off and fell down into the reverse gear which prevented me from going into reverse. My trans guy said that I pushed in the clutch at the right time because there was no damage caused to the other gears. He rebuilt the tranaxle for $300.00 dollars including parts. It really feels nice and tight now as opposed to the way it used to be.
My engine is a 306CI with 425BHP at 365 FT LBS of torque.
I firmly believe that this is a solid trans and it works well as long as you stay within the limits of it's capability. Remember that this trans was in a car that weighed around 4,000 lbs. and we use it in a car that weighs less than 2500 lbs. This is why we can use it because the torque is better as long as you don't use monster wide tires. Still, the fact remains that this is a roadrace car and not a drag car.
For the fact that this trans is extremely cheap and readily eccessible I will continue to use it. If I do
change to something else it will be the 01E 6 speed. This is a trans that Audi uses in the A8 and the RS6. which is rated over 380HP. For $6,000 bucks that is a good trans to have. Roaring Forties is the only GT40 manufacturer that offers this option at this time. The Blue GT40 in the video clip that was on another thread has this trans and it is awsome according to the owner.
I hope this year at Run and Gun I see other manufacturers represented. Rick Merz was there last year with his GTD. We had great time and I hope others will join in on the fun with their GT40. I know of no other venue that gives us the chance to get together and have a fun compitition with each other. I'll be there and I hope there will be many others bringing their GT40's.
I'm lookin' to kick some but this year!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
