427 FE Headers

I understand if going with the SPF GT40, the headers that come with the car are for a SBF. What is a source for the bundle of snakes if a FE block is installed?

This member, who doesn't appear to have posted for a while, developed a set of FE headers and I do believe it may have been for an SPF. However, whatever he produced seemed to be of exemplary engineering quality. You could try pinging him a PM or other members may know how to contact him.

Hope it helps...

Mutt,

SPF needs to be ordered as FE engined. In doing so the correct headers for an FE are provided AS WELL AS other mods (in particuliar the transaxle cross member is different than the small block version).

As pointed out, you get the headers that are for the intended powertrain. I had a converstaion with Lance in the last 2 weeks and the headers were never an issue. I did however want the MKI rear body half, or even a MKI version, and was wondering why the website listed only the MKII version with FE availabilty. I was under the impression the tubs were the same, so wanted to know why an FE couldn't be fitted. It seems that the problem is with the closeness of the shell to the exhaust system, I am going to get more precise details because I prefer the MKI look and the FE engine( I know, backassward), I think I can do it with a little modification.

Dave,

On the FE engine the "bundle of snakes" sits higher than the small block. Where the collectors sits is a few inches higher and will foul on a MK I clip. I am sure you could modify the MK I clip. If you look at the MK I vs. MK II the MK I drops lower than the outer wheel flare area, on a MK II this is reasonably flat across to allow clearance for the headers. And yes there are some differences in the tub that could be done on a MK I.

Mutt,

Rick is correct. The FE headers are larger dia. and sit higher in order to accomodate the larger dims of the FE Ht. Rear clip countour is significantly different (raised center).

Transaxle is raiseds by means of a upper crossmember that is 1" higher in the center. Motor mounts are different and raise the front of the motor higher than in a SB.

I believe there are some mods to the mono as well and the firewall is bumped out further to allow the longer FE front end (also special accessory brackets and belts are needed.

Need larger cooling fans and best off with a shroud as Olthoff has designed.

ECT.
