A8 2.8 axle

Local srap yard has a A8 2.8 petrol early model, its not possible to get at the codes, (car on top), any idea what spec the tranny might be?.
I can only move it out if purchased, its at a good price £50.!

Frank, the wheels are off the car-& I can only just open the bonnet, so no way of getting any pic's.
I quess the car had various axle types fitted?
The gear change feels like a 5 speed, as to the engine- I have a 302 Ford.
Have been hopeing to get a 944 turbo axle ( might still yet, looking at one later this week), but if useing a Audi axle may just use a Rover / Buick 215ci and use a turbo.
I think the 215 with a turbo might work well, given the softer power delivery that you get.

That A8 manual gearbox is a 012 unit (very weak) and a 5 speed. It has very narrow gears and a strong turbo 4 cylinder can reduce it to scrap metal with the drop of a clutch.

One other thing, from what I can find via the search option,the O1E is the best Audi box followed by OA2, were these fitted to any european cars?

01E is the storngest (IMHO) most available and readily supported by the aftermarket.

They were fitted to a number of European only vehicles.

Is the final ratio 3.5: 1?, any good? thanks

01X is pretty weak as well, it shares many parts with the 012. Gear widths are 10-12mm, very narrow.

You want an 01E or an 0A2.

The only car that uses the 0A2 in the USA is the Porsche Boxster S and possibly the Cayman.

The 6-speed in the earlier Boxster S and Cayman has the G86 model number. Is this the same as the OA2? I am not sure what the model number is on the later model 6-speed but it is a different transmission.

I believe that is the case. 0A2 is the Audi designation, G86 is the Porsche designation. Getrag has a third different designation I can't recall at the moment.
