Alloy vs. Iron blocks

Well, pardon me for asking squire....
That wasn't a scold which is why I said "so far"; nobody had mentioned it YET. In fact I don't even know if you can buy them; I just know that they made at least one.

Here's more info along with a claimed weight of 79 lb (!). On youtube there is a series of three videos showing it being machined.

I haven't seen a price but I'd sure be looking if I were contemplating an FE build. A year and a half ago he was hoping for $5,000 and undercutting Shelby; see http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=558089

<a litte later>

Now I'm seeing references to weight around 65 lb. But there isn't much said after more than a year ago....

That's rather more like it! I've been shocked with some of the weights listed. Ok so they're 427ci/7l but still. As a comparison I believe my 244ci/4l block (inc caps and cap bolts) is 85lbs.

Theoretically I think a 2v/cyl pushrod engine should be lighter than a 4v/cyl DOHC engine which probably explains why the 302 can come to about 200kg even with an iron block.

Casting the basic block is a LOT less expensive for a manufacturer than CNC. Yes, the cast block does need a fair bit of finish machining before it's usable. CNC is great for wishbones and sub-mounts and caliper adapter plates and such, but it's really not very efficient or good for engine blocks.....

I have seen LSM's work, and it is like art. I have been talking to them recently about building a block for me. Right now, I am between LSM and Moran Motorsports for a billet block.

Regards Brian

FYI, David Kirkham had posted this on a ClubCobra thread recently (7/01/2012) regarding their alloy block:

"The block has many hard miles on it now. We are tweaking the design. Hope to have them out this year."
