Any Opinion on Dax GT40?

I have been offered a Dax GT40 replica, but it's not one I know a great deal about. Does anyone have any views or advice? I believe it is slightly higher than other reps (which might not be a bad thing for me). Are they worth the same kind of maoney or are they a bit of an oddball?

Is that the same one as on eBay now, up in Scotland?. They were slightly higher, by 2", but don't look out of shape. Bit more interior space I believe. There are a couple of people on here with the breed so they may be able to tell you more. At the end it;s what you like that counts.

Hi Mark,
I have a Dax40 and Ian Anderson too. The Dax is slightly higher, but for tall people that makes it a good choice. Mine is 41.5" with a 4" ground clearance front.
You would be hard pushed to see the differences when side by side with other makes, so definitely not an 'odball' but I found the quick way to spot a Dax is the extra inch or so between the rear side intake and the sill. Have a look on the GTD40 web site at my video from Goodwood 2004 see if you can spot the Dax among the grid display.
I would guess that the Dax is slightly heavier since it seems to have a robust chassis, but not by much, and the chassis was designed by John Tojeiro too. In all respects it seems to compare well with other spaceframe chassis replicas, and I guess pricewise it should be similar given similar engine, brakes and equipment spec.

regards

Dave

I can second all that Dave said

I've also got one and they are not lightweight (About 1150 kg at SVA with Rover Efi compared to about 980kg for a Tornado Ford (Ali head) but mine kolds a lot less fuel!)

Chassis is solid and thick metal walls on the tube

Fiberglass is thick - almost 1cm thick at base of windscreen
GTD Front screen fits as replacement so that is not too odd ball

The Dax seats are not period identical but can be replaced with others

Suspension was done by Tojero and is different to GTD etc on where the arms attach as they go almost straight forward from rear hub to back of cockpit.

DAX is a friendly company and will assist where they can but remember they sold the project about 15 years back (Rumour was it was sold to someone going to set it up in India to get better labour rates - he flew somewhere over a weekend and the plane flew into the side of a mountain - the project was then tied up in Indian customs for years)

What other questions do you have?

Ian

Thanks Guys, valuable info.

How do you think they compare handling wise? I'm not too bothered about top end perfomrance or straight line speed, as I am sure they are all quick. I'm really after a tractable, useable road car.

Interesting locations you guys.......I live just outside Glasgow and I work in Ascot, so I can't be too far away from either of you!

I have a GT40 kit at the moment but it is a real 'oddball' as nobody has ever been able to identify the chassis etc. I'm just not getting time to work on it these days, so I think it would be better to just get a complete car that I can improve over time, and just sell mine on part built.

I guess the other question is price. There seems to be a massive variation on price from one GTD to another, so different makes are probably even harder to pin down.

Mark,
put some phot's up of the chassis etc, somebody will be sure to identify it. They are clever buggers on here.! rockonsmileThat should help when you come to sell it.

You're welcome to come and have a look see if you want. Better if it's dry as I only have a single garage and it's tight!

Then if it's a dry day time for a spin?

Handling and brakes etc - well it turns and stops better than anything I have driven for ages but the loud pedal always makes me smile.

I've had mine on Gurston Down track at a training day so no times and it scared me how quick it accelerated and then hauled iself back down for corners - lots of ture squeal but they are old - time hardened BF Goodriches that are on it

Me - road tyres and not wanting to bend it on my second ever run at the hill. (Next time up I spun the selector on the gear linkage shaft and could only get 2nd and 4th from there on in)

Thanks Ian,

It would be great to have the opportunity to see your car. I'm in Ascot most weeks, so I will let you know and hopefully we can sort something out. The video clips are great....that car of yours sounds fantastic......and clearly goes well too!

How long have you had it?
