Caution has to be exercised in all online interactions. The internet can be a dangerous place!

The forum cannot protect you against scammers if you don't use good practices with interacting with others.

  1. If you're getting contacted by members with low post count then beware. Someone that has been here for a few weeks or days, contacting you about selling things - beware. Apologies to new folks, but that's the trend and we have observed over the last couple of years.
  2. If you're purchasing something from someone do as much research as possible online using Google, Social Media, and so on using the given name, addresses, phone numbers etc. and ask for references.
  3. POST DETAILS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE TRIED TO SCAM YOU!!!! Put that information up on this thread, loud and clear for all to see.

Meanwhile, we're making adjustments to private message requirements and the like to try and stop folks from dropping in here and starting scams right away.

Gentlemen, I wholeheartedly agree with you and maybe there is a possibility to require to upload one‘s ID as a new user? I, as a recent joiner, would certainly support it. I have been in touch with a senior forum member about his car and voluntarily sent my ID as well as a link to my day job profile to make sure I am taken seriously. Maybe that’s a bit over the top, but something like it might at least cut down on these scam attempts by new users. Since I am „fresh“ and with a very low post count I would otherwise automatically fall into the „potential scammer“ category

Just an idea. Happy holidays and a healthy new year to everyone!

All the best, Jochen

Ron, I share your concerns & I can assure you as the CEO of All Classic Motors Ltd for the past 28 years, yes, things have CHANGED! We went on online back in 1997 while most of my competitors laughed & scoffed LOL! I am fordautolite on ebay since 1999, we have enjoyed 25 years of AMAZING customers & perfect feedback. Also joined Pay Pal in 2000. Sadly, with the recent & rising threat of scammers the internet has become their oyster. When I took the opportunity to join this wonderful site, I should've know better, because as you well know there are NO cheap GT40 parts, everything about this amazing car is expensive, attracting scammers. In my humble but experienced opinion, scammers more predominate on this site than any other. Don't get me wrong, this is a much needed & wonderful site, but sooner or later effective vetting will need to become standard or folks will more than likely move on, especially if you are to accuse all new folks as being a scammer. I wish I had the answers.... The scammers I have personally had the misfortune of encountering from this sight are

I hope this helps, have a great day.

I do not know if this site attracts scammers more than other similar sites. But there aren't to many similar sites - ClubCobra is often down, and offline, or broken for many functions. We run the same software and protections as any forum site, Zenforo, and many of these are far larger membership sites. We have the same versions of software and so on, use two factor verification of account, and much more.

What we do have which is a bit unique is a largely older clientele, and, one that generally has a lot of disposable income. Those two things can conspire to attract folks whose intentions might be nefarious. My wife is a professor at NC State and an Adjunct Professor at Duke, specializing in internet privacy and security. She routinely gives seminars to various groups on these topics and unfortunately it is fact that the older we are the more likely it is we can fall prey to scammers.

I'm afraid there are no solutions to keep scammers off the site. It's free to register and join, so any competent human can join up. And if they are interacting with people via email, PM, and so on, well, the sky is the limit on whatever crooked scheme they have devised.

We will do what we can to delete spam accounts, put barriers up to using the PM system, and so on but beyond that it's hard to do much more.

PS-none of the emails you listed for the scamming parties are in the GT40s.com database of users. The user name you posted,

edwwarddy

was and I just banned him. His log ins showed IP addresses in the Northeast, Kansas, England, and more all inside a few hours. Clearly he is using a VPN.

One more tip for dealing with potential scammers trying to sell you something. If they include a photo, right-click on the image in your web browser and search for similar images (in Chrome it's now called "Search image with Google Lens". If you find the same photo(s) online where else and they haven't been posted by the same person, they probably hijacked the images to use as bait.
