Dual tank EFI set up?

Just a thought, as I like to keep things simple. Why not run a mechanical pump off the engine to feed a single sump system like the fitech force fuel system. It's internally regulated and holds a small reserve. Outfit both tanks with senders, vents and bottom sump pickups and tie them together with a single feed to the mechanical pump. Then just one return line to either one or both?
Why reinvent the wheel? Should not be that hard to replicate the original solution with a slightly smaller crossoverpipe?
Some sort of flaps/non return valves that close if velocity gets too high in the crossover.
