filters a good Idea

As I reported on another thread, I had to pull out of the race meeting last weekend, when the motor dropped a cylinder.I thought I may have bent a valve from an over rev but I certainly didn't remember having one.All I knew for sure was compression on #1 was down to 30 and was puffing back up the trumpet. As today was a holiday I pulled the head off and found a chunk missing from the edge of the inlet valve and a lot of marks on the piston top and combustion chamber roof.Obviously a stone has got down the unfiltered trumpet. This could have done a lot more damage so I will run filters in the future.Nice to know it's not my driving that caused it. I'll take the other head off and freshen the valve faces and seats.

Ross,

sorry to here about that. I'm supprised at how many members are running without air cleaners. They might not look as cool with them on, but they sure save on bearings, and in your case if a big chunk gets in you loose things like valves and pistons. It's usually the .010mm size particals that absolutely tear motors up. They are so small they get right into everything including bearings and between pistons and cylinder walls, tear up cam shafts, etc........

There's no way I'd spend all that money on a motor and then not put a good air filter on it. Well at least all motors have oil filters to stop some of what is getting past the lack of air filteration.

good luck with new setup.

Ross -

Was at the track in the 65 mustang last week, and went off-roading so to speak :-) as I spun around on the dirt portion of the track the car filled with rocks and dirt.

When I got back to the pits I popped the hood and had a large amount of rocks and dirt that collected in the manifold area. I was glad that I had a good filter on the motor as it would have injested a good amount of desert rubble. I'm sure without it I would have had some of the same misfortune you just had. I always thought the air filter was just to keep the paint on the hood from burning when the car backfires /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
