GT40 Bug/Rock Deflector

This how to is for a bug / rock deflector like that used on the original Le Mans cars in the day. The dimensions were taken from an actual (real) car. I have seen others that are slightly different. Always remember when critiquing these posts that not all GT40s were created equal so some discretion is allowed.

Start with a piece of acrylic (Plexiglass, Lexan etc.) cut to the dimensions shown below.

The hardware used is a stainless steel #10 counter sunk Phillips head screw, Deco washer, Nylon support washer, stainless steel flat washer and Nylock nut. Drill the holes and make the radius cuts on the corners with a disk or belt sander.

Clamp the acrylic piece to a clean surface with a sharp edge (with the paper still on) along the line marked at the 1½ inch line. Using a heat gun (a heat shrink tubing gun works great but be careful), heat the piece uniformly along the line. A hair dryer will not have sufficient heat to get the job done. What ever you do, DON'T use a propane torch. Don't keep the heat in one spot too long, doing so will melt the plastic making it discolor and loose its' transparency. If you have never tried this before, try the bending process on a piece of scrap to get a feel for how this is done. Move the gun back and forth along the line. It may take a few minutes to get a uniform heat all along the length to get the piece hot enough to bend. Gently bend the edge down to about a 60 to 70 degree angle. Peel the paper off and it is ready to mount.

Cut a piece of gasket material to match the profile of the deflector base. Very carefully place the gasket EXACTY where you want it making sure it is square to the windshield and in the position you want it where the hardware will not interfere with anything on the bottom side. Once you drill the holes, you're stuck with holes in your hood. It can't be emphasized enough to measure, inspect, measure again and be CERTAIN before you punch the holes.

This thing actually works quite nicely and has already saved my windscreen from a rock with only 1200 miles on the car.
