GT40 Rear View Video Camera

There have been a number of posts on this forum discussing rear view or backup cameras. This write up shows how I did it on a SPF GT.

The rear visibility sitting in the driver's seat of a GT40 is very poor. This modification makes a great improvement.

These cameras are available at many local auto parts stores like Pep Boys and hundreds of locations on the Internet for less than $100.

A great place to mount the camera is in the center of the rear deck just above the quick jacks. Some may criticize this location on the grounds that it points the camera down at a slight angle and is too close to the exhaust. The camera has a very wide angle lens so the slight downward tilt is a non issue. If this still bothers you just make some tapered spacers out of thick plastic washers to square it up. After 2000 miles on P2133, there is no sign of any problems related to heat from the exhaust.

Mark the camera in the two spots to clear the Allen head screws and use a rat tail file to make a relief for the screw heads. It is not recommended using the screws at this position to mount the camera because the holes would be too close to the edge of the mounting ears to be secure. Drill a hole for the wires to pass through into the engine compartment as shown.

Using hardware like that shown below, drill two holes and mount the camera.
Route the wires along the rear deck using tabbed tie wraps fastened to the existing hardware as shown.

It is a good idea to put a small glob RTV sealant on the wires where they protrude through the hole at the back of the camera.

Run the wires into the loom conduit to the end where the rear light connector is located. Using a two conductor quick disconnect (available from Jegs), configure a plug as shown below.

At this point simply run a 12 volts positive lead and a ground lead back to the quick disconnect and install the other sex to the connector you used for the camera. Make sure you route the the power wires well away from any other wires that may pick up spurious signals that will degrade the displayed image on the LCD. Mounting the LCD display is a personal choice. On P2133, it is mounted on the window frame of the door. It is out of the way there and is easily seen for efficient use.
