GT40 References

I want to create a list of references. We'll start with the books about GT40s, but should probably also have other topics, such as engine building & engineering and such.

I think I'll try to keep this post as up-to-date as possible. If you have additions or corrections, post them as replies and I will update this post to reduce the amount of plowing through posts somoene has to do...

Starting with my own book collection:

GT40: An Individual History and Race Record Ronnie Spain.
Contains a history of the development of the GT40 program, as well as race and chassis records. Recently (August 2003) reissued.

Ford GT40 Production & Racing History /Individual Chassis Record Trevor Legate.
Also covers the history of the GT40 program. Some discussion of Safir MkV & replicas. Less detailed chassis history than Spain, but includes a copy of the parts manual from the Mk III with exploded diagrams

Ford GT40 John S. Allen.
Lots of color photographs. Discussion of replicas vs copies vs. lookalikes and look-similars.
Additional information from Rick Muck (Mark IV):
128 pages published by Motorbook Intl. This a photo book comprised totally of color images taken at the 1989 Watkins Glen GT40 reunion and the 1993 Road America event plus some other US events. There are pictures from several UK gatherings.

The Ford GT40: An Anglo-American Competition Classic David Hodges.
Mostly covers the GT40 program history. Some great vintage b&w photos. Very brief chassis & race history.

Ford versus Ferrari: The Battle for LeMans Anthony Pritchard.
Starts with history of LeMans & Ferrari, then goes into Cobras and the GT40. Year-by-year race history of GT40s vs. Ferraris (and Chaparrals too).

From Chris Melia:

The Inside Story of the Fastest Fords Karl Ludvigsen.
was my first book on the GT40 and is certainly worth putting in your Christmas List it is full of early photo's with excellent detail.

From Clayton:

Holman Moody - The Legendary Race Team Tom Cotter, Al Pearce.
Description: Holman Moody is a legend in NASCAR racing and competed in other forms of racing including Can-Am, drag racing, Le Mans and even rallying. Here for the first time is the story of the legendary race team from De Paolo racing in the 1950s to the high-tech shop of today. Every race fan has heard of Holman Moody. This book tells the whole story of the partnership between two men, John Holman and Ralph Moody, who could agree on virtually nothing, but managed to build the world`s most famous racing team. It goes on to record the renaissance of the team under Lee Holman, son of the founder, after the death of his father and the subsequent business disasters of the mid-1970s.

Ford GT40 Including Lola GT P68 & GT70
Description: Magazine articles from 1963 to 1982 on the Ford GT40, Lola GT, P68 & Ford GT70.

Ford: The Dust & The Glory - A Racing History 1901 - 1967 Leo Levine.
Description: This reprint of the long out-of-print 1968 classic covers seven decades of Ford`s pioneering and illustrious activities in auto racing. As author Leo Levine writes, "no other American manufacturer has been more involved with the sport. In many respects, the competition history of Ford parallels the progress of auto racing in this country." From Henry Ford`s own victory at the October 1901 Detroit Driving Club race to the 1967 LeMans triumph of A.J. Foyt and Dan Gurney, this first volume of Ford: The Dust and the Glory tells the inside story of Ford`s spectacular racing accomplishments. Ford: The Dust and the Glory features the stories - and numerous photographs - of the great races, the great cars, and the legendary personalities (both the famous drivers and those "behind the scenes") associated with Ford and its great competitors of the era. Covering 67 triumphant years, this first of two volumes (the second volume will cover 1968-2000) conveys, as author Leo Levine puts it, "the sound and the fury, the speed and the drama" of racing itself, while spotlighting Ford`s groundbreaking accomplishments.

Ford Total Performance Alex Gabbard.
Description: Subtitled "The Road to World Racing Domination 1962 - 1970" Between those years, Ford launched a massive assault on every major venue of motorsport in the world, with unparalleled success. From F1 to le Mans, NASCAR to the Indy 500 and Trans-Am to NHRA Drag Racing, Ford eventually won championships in each venue. In this book the author chronicles Ford`s rise to world motor racing domination, taking readers behind the scenes with the men responsible for designing, building & driving the machines that took the racing world by storm.
(has 26 pages on the GT40)

From Rick Muck (Mark IV):

Shelby GT40: The Shelby American Color Archives David Friedman.
160 pages of 1960s era photos by Friedman, the offical SAI photographer. Some familiar pictures and a lot of images not seen before. Covers the Shelby involement in the GT40 program from the azrrival of the first chassis to the triumph at LeMans in 1967. Includes photos from the FoMoCo crash test of a MK II (ouch...) and the early "J" car development. Has color sections. The high point for me is lots of "crew preparing the cars" type photos and ecellent identification of who is who. Size is 10.25" X10.25"

Other books I don't have so can't provide any description:

Creating the Ford GT40: How America's First LeMans Winner Was Conceived, Designed and Engineered Carroll Smith, Pete Lyons, Earl H. Teske.
This is the book Carroll Smith was working on when he passed away. Apparently never published (yet), but sure to become a must-have if it ever does get published.
Update from Bob Brzezinski (snakeeyes):
I saw Pete at Monterey and asked him about the book. He is going ahead with it as he mentioned that Carroll provided him with a huge amount of text in draft form some time before he passed away. He was not able to give me a tentative publication date but rest assured it will be coming out in the foreseeable future and should provide some unique insights into the GT40 program--

Also out-of-print & very expensive.

Not only do we have them here but I would venture to suggest we use them too : eg Tour Auto Goodwood etc etc etc !

Oh and I agree about this book

I also spoke with Pete and he is very excited about doing the book and was very excited to learn about our Forum ,he was also hoping to gather more information from this Forum too....very cool

Hey, you guys are awesome - 1000 points apiece.

I've rolled your comments into the main post which now crashes my browser when I edit it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Even though it features P917's and F512's "A French Kiss With Death" is a great book about racing these cars at LeMans and the making of the movie.

Hmmm... Perhaps a section on books related to LeMans (but not necessarily GT40s) would be in order... It'll have to wait til at least next week though...

For those who want to live the period of GT40's coming from the horse's mounth, I strongly suggest to read "The certain sound" from John Wyer in person. It really brings you back in this exiting period and also tells you the other stories behind the screen.
Problem is that the book is rare and therfore expensive to find.

Hi Steve
A few more

The unfair advantage ISBN 0837600731
From the Publisher
In 1974 Mark Donohue took a year off from driving at the height of his racing career and wrote a candid and revealing book about his journey through the world of auto racing—from amateur races in his own '57 Corvette to winning the Indy 500 in Roger Penske's McLaren M16.
Yet there is nothing sensational about Donohue's story—this is not a tale of fame and fortune, nor an exposé of the scandalous off-track lives of race-car drivers. Rather Donohue presents a fascinating and focused behind-the-scenes look at how a champion driver—who won virtually every racing class he competed in—prepared himself and his cars to win.

With characteristic modesty, Donohue is quick to attribute much of his racing success to the many "unfair advantages" he had over his competitors, such as faster engines, better tires, and a more professional crew. But after reading just a few chapters of his book, it becomes clear that Mark Donohue's greatest unfair advantage was his own relentless determination to build a better car and be a better driver every time he set foot on a race track.

The Unfair Advantage captures a uniquely American blend of intellect and scrappiness. A graduate in engineering from Brown University, Donohue integrated creativity, openness to new ideas, humor, and his persistent will to win into every part of his approach to racing. When Donohue puts that formula into words in The Unfair Advantag the result is as much an attitude and perspective as anything else. As such, it has had wide reaching and particularly personal impact for almost 30 years in the world of motorsport participants and enthusiasts.

The Unfair Advantage is also a glimpse into a more human, albeit more dangerous, period in racing—raw, high-powered cars, comparatively small budgets and tight time tables. Many of the personalities, competition classes, and engineering principles of the early seventies still dominate the racing scene today.

Inside you'll find profiles of many of the mechanics, drivers, and crew chiefs Donohue worked with, and won with during his career. Special attention is given to Walter Hansgen, Peter Revson, Don Cox (Penske team engineer), Karl Kainhofer and John Woodard (Penske team mechanics) and of course Roger Penske. Donohue also shows how studying his major rivals—including Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, and Jackie Stewart—helped him to develop his own competitive edge.

Now, 25 years after it's original publication, The Donohue sons and Bentley Publishers are working together to release a new edition of The Unfair Advantage. The new edition contains all of the original text. Expanded content includes photographs and separately appended material that fills out the Donohue story in words and pictures and provides historical context.

Hawkeye Description: Paul Hawkins was probably the most colourful racing driver to come out of Australia and certainly one of the fastest. There hasn`t been a biography like this since Duncan Hamilton`s Touch Wood. It is the most fun to read of any recent motor racing book and everyone will enjoy reading it. Paul lived life in the fast lane and author Ivan McLeod has interviewed those who shared it with him to get the whole story of this larger than life character.
