Just joined...looking for build support/lessons learned

Hello All,

Just decided recently to live my dream and get a replica built. Pretty much decided on the RCR40 and Prestige for my motor but now comes the challenges of how to get it all put together!? :-)

Welcome
Good choice for a guy with the right skills.
Enjoy the time well spent !!
Unfortunately, "I" do not come with build skills! I am reasonably decent at general DIY and definitely technically competent with what needs to happen, but I am no mechanic or fabricator. I have a good mechanic I have chatted with over the years, but space and time is what I need to figure out.

Well........You may enjoy a challenging build, it's a very different kind of car . Have you given any thought to Supperformance ?

If you are good at and enjoy solving problems that are mechanical in nature you will probably be ok. I had done some work on cars and enjoyed woodworking so I knew my way around a tool box. I have only had my kit for a month but feel confident that with assistance from folks on this forum I will succeed. These cars will stretch and expand your skills. Before I received my kit l learned to weld, installed a real air compressor and ceiling hoist, set up a blast cabinet and power coat oven, and bought some tools. I already had some fiberglass and body work experience. This month I will be learning how to use a Tormach CNC mill. Most importantly, enjoy the build and take it one step at a time.

Welcome to GT40s, Randy…
Tons of build logs here to assist you. Take things slow - double and triple check everything, before making a move that is permanent (Holes, cuts, et al).. Some of our older build logs have lost their photos (mine included) due to the Photobucket Extorsion fiasco a bunch of years ago - but there’s still good information remaining with the logs. When you get your car, start your build log and ask questions there to keep things tidy. Help will come - maybe not immediately, but soon. Meanwhile use your time to familiarize yourself with other parts of your car.
The journey can be enjoyable, if you don’t stress out over it.

Don't be scared to try anything, and use this as an excuse to acquire both tools and skills which will be useful going forward. You will (eventually) be happy you did!

Like Randy, I have also picked up a mill, lathe, AC/DC TIG, and a bunch of other items and skills which have proven very useful in other projects. This isn't so much about building a specific car as it is building a hobby.
