Lahaina

We just got back from our Maui fix. Lots of construction. I hope the government can see their way to resurrect Front street the way it was.

My family has been to Maui/Lahaina at least 15 times over the last two decades. A truly special place. Out four kids have such fond memories of Maui and Lahaina and Ka'anapali beach. So tragic to see the destruction there and the slow rebuilding.

Last I heard the blame was being laid on the local power company workers. Apparently lines were left down on the ground while repairs were being made and the winds picked up while workers were at lunch. The wind speeds were above the power company's upper limit for leaving lines on the ground. The high winds allowed sparks associated with the live lines to catch the surrounding vegetation on fire and whoosh, there it went. Do I have the facts roughly correct here?

Most recent fly over 6-20-25. Quite a bit of residential reconstruction. No front street commercial progress, More government in the way delays. Who would have predicted that?

I am beginning to loose faith in Lahaina ever being rebuilt. If I had to guess the area will become a residential area with a few condos on the beach and all the restaurants. bars, and small shops/art studios moving to other areas of Maui. We'll see.

A little more on the politics..................ya that. My take is this raises more questions that it answers. I won't offer my opinion so I can honor the forum guidelines.

Two year anniversary. Things have started slowly but IMHO, beginning to accelerate. Especially in the residential areas. The front street commercial zone future is beginning to reveal itself with some first steps, especially along the ocean side of front street. I think you can anticipate what the future will look like along the west side of front street. My guess is it will be a foot traffic promenade beach front, without parting along the once side.

What will Lahaina be in two more years? I believe most of the residential property's will be done or under construction. The commercial areas behind front street mostly will be in progress or completed. This leaves front street. The ocean side public areas will be done and in use. The rest of front street will be in progress with most of the buildings being restaurants, bars and retail space. It will never be the same but it will be restored and open for business. My guess is by the summer of 2028, the fifth anniversary will find the little town we all loved back and thriving.

2 and a half years since the fire................. Im very disapointed on the comercial district progress. Thsi area could be very fast to be rebuilt if the govermant would get out of the way.

Your absolutely right Howard.
I had a talking to by our Mayor years ago because I made this statement. ( This town council as a group seems to be able to make a decision dumber than any of the individuals in said room.
