Manx TT April 2010

oh no, sorry to have mentioned the trophy!
don't forget we might even stretch to a small trophy for an overall class winner... "Separate classes for one make cars will be provided if 5 or more entries are received."

Hi Shelyb

I would like to come along to the IoM and make up the numbers. I have looked at the regs and wonder which class I would be in and what would need to be done to the car the MSA blue book is pretty opaque.

Guidance would be appreciated

Steve

Hi Steve
The group you would compete in would be:- 7B Post 1981 Sports Libre & Kit Cars over 2000 c.c.
Do we know who is competing this year?
Regards Martin

hoping to get across myself this year again, enjoyed it last time seeing the gt40s strut their stuff. unlikely to be competing tho as a few jobs in hand right now on my t70 and probably not going to get sorted in time, but looking forward to going again.

Martin
Thanks for the class that's the one I thought would be the one. Looking at the regs it says the cars must comply with MSA tec regs, so to the 'Blue Book', pretty impenetrable reading!

At the start of section S 10. it says 'in addition to complying with section 'J' all vehicles competing in sprints and hillclimbs must' -- . Then come the various minimum standards for the various categories I have narrowed it down to 'Road going series production cars and specialist production cars' i.e. S 11.1 to S.8.1.
If that is the right section so far so good.

Section 'J' Competitors vehicles appears to be OK for a road going car up to 5.19.1 Safety Regulations -- Safety Criteria i.e. section 'K'

I will try to list per the book
K 1.6.1 Rollcage I think mine is OK
K 2.1 Seat belts no mention of date so I assume my FIA 'expires 2008' four point harness will be OK
K 3 Fire extinguisher is the minimum a hand held in the car enough?
K 4 Fuel cell?
K 5 Red warning light, rear fog should be OK?
K 6 There are some issues here Fillers must not protrude through body and vents be to the rear of the cockpit?
K 7 Crush-able structure???
K 8 External circuit breaker mine is inside drivers door
K 9 Xmas provided overalls but will I have to buy gloves it's only recommended?
K 10 Helmet is up to spec
K 11 Goggles visor not needed in closed car
K 12,13,14 are more general stuff.

Have I got the wrong end of the stick here?

I would be very dissapointed to be rejected at scrutineering what needs to be done to avoid the thumbs down?

Regards

Steve

Let me know if I can help.

Martin

hi martin!
am doing, but quite a bit of personal stuff on at the mo also, my mum is very ill right now (terminal) and i dont want to commit to anything i might not make this yr. will have plenty of time (i hope!) in future years. if i can make it tho i'm happy to volunteer myself as pit crew if you need a hand with anything?
i will get my car ready as best i can anyway as i hope to get some training done this year with Mike Wilds, have been chatting with him about some 1 to 1 coaching.

i will bring my proper camcorder this year to film it as well, rather than messing about with the nokia. might do it justice then!

martin will advise but from what i saw steve the scrutineers werent being over picky, in terms of construction and structure. all the obvious stuff like fire ext, harnesses, seats, overalls, helmets etc and general safety aspects /roadworthyness of the cars. a well built kit wouldnt have many issues i would have thought.

my main jobs this winter (delayed start!) are the headers (one needs cutting and shutting to align it right), cermacoating and repacking the back boxes. all the wadding has gone completely and the car was getting quite loud last season. my back boxes are going to have to be cut open and packed, and made re-sealable.
i have some better quality rockers to fit and the engine and diff oils to change, plus found a minor oil weep on a dry sump hose that can be done with oil out of car. headers came off on tues night and am taking them to be cut n shut and then coated this weekend all being well.
not a massive to do list but a bit later start than i hoped for. also got to put a clutch in my 4x4 towcar as i have about killed the old one!

Sorry chaps - but unbeknown to me, Frank in his infinite wisdom returned the trophy to the originator as he considered the GTD40 Car Club defunct - Thanks Frank....!

Having spoken to Robin Batt of COH Baines who kindly donated the trophy in the first place and having further discussed eligibility of competing vehicles, it has now been posted back to me and as soon as the engraving update is completed - it will be forwarded to the new owner.... Sorry for the delay chaps.....

To put the record straight - and OFFICIALLY!!

The club does currently still exist.

It is still a paid up affiliated club on the MSA register.

It does still get invites to competitive events.

It does however now have a lack of members that are currently competing though - partly due to car sales, change of circumstances, credit crunch, etc etc.

I for one have not renewed my licence this year yet, although I will do so on Monday to get my Brighton Speed Trials entry in the post...

Hi Paul

I registered on the GTD website some time ago but can't access the site now. I was looking for the videos of the Manx event to try to learn some of the course as I'm very much a novice.
What do I need to do to access the pages?

Re the 'Bains Trophy' the Manx event is the weekend after the GT40 club AGM and track day at Donnington Park 25 April, several GT40 entrants to the Manx Classic will be at Donnington would not this be the opportune moment to get the trophy back in time for the event?

Steve

The Manx Classic was 28-30 April. The event and venue are fantastic, the weather the organisers provided had everyone reaching for the sun block!
The Northwest raised some entries however the Donnington event had left Mikes car needing work and not enough time, John's 40 also needed attention thus resorting to GT3, Martin and I were there for scrutineering. Martins car unfortunatly developed a noise in the valvetrain ( possibly a lifter), all was not lost as the organisers let him run the Volvo TD, he rebadged as a GT40 replica and put in very creditable times. I have to thank the organisers for a very 'can do' spirit.
The event run on various sections of the TT coarse is just fantastic, it was a pity there were not more Gt40's as five cars would have had a seperate class, we had to run with the very fast 7's that had the FTD
Anyway Martin won the 'Nill Desperandum' award for dogged determination in the Volvo and I had the fastest run up Llergy Frissell with a GT40.... isnt there a trophy for that !!!
I'm hooked for next year

Steve
