Looking for personal experience with resealing ZF transaxle

I have a 1974 Pantera, a small leak has appears on the passenger side plate which means I need to remove the trans to properly replace the gasket. I already know this is going to turn into a “while I have it out” scenario so I intend to replace both the side plate gaskets and axle stub seals, as well as the pan gasket while it is out. There is a write up on Pantera Place about doing this,The rear cover I am not so sure about, the write up mentioned removing one nut at a time and sealing them with RTV rather than complete removal of the rear cover and I have asked around and searched the Pantera forum for people’s personal experience regarding doing this and haven’t found much. I am wanting to avoid shipping the trans out to a rebuilder, as all I’m really needing to do is replace a few gaskets, not take the entire thing apart.

Any input is appreciated.

I just wanted to make a post praising Ron McCall and his rebuilding service for the ZF transaxle. Everyone on here pretty much knows from others that Ron is the person to send your ZF to. I got the pleasure of driving down to his shop a couple of times and saw the piles of ZFs and parts plus all the gorgeous Panteras he had in there. Now my real praise for him came this week. I had gotten my ZF gone through and painted by ROn to make sure everything was 100% before throwing it in. That was at least a year ago and life and other projects got in the way and I’m just back to working on...

Mark at IPSCO has all the gaskets available, I have been told you need to soak them in water for 24 hours prior to use. I believe the recommendation on the lower case (pan) is Yamabond or similar in place of a gasket.

Ron is your man and can usually turn around a transaxle quickly, but I'm also betting there are local Pantera owners wiling to help, we are a great group of people!

I think I’ve seen that name mentioned in the Pantera forum. Is he the guy with the blue and black Pantera race car? I don’t have Facebook, which is where I was told to contact him.

I would think a local transaxle shop could handle it. If they’re capable of doing Porsche transmissions, there’s no reason they couldn’t do a ZF. It’s all nuts and bolts at the end of the day.
