Marchal headlights....which bulbs

Just wondered if anybody can let me know which bulb fits the Marchal headlights on a Mk1 GT40.
Is there an LED equivalent for this bulb.
Thanks for any help in advance.

I have an RCR40. Not sure where the headlights come from (I think Lucus) but they came with Hella 7951 bulbs. My understanding is the way the 7951 high low beams work is a combination of the filament height and enclosure geometry. H4 LED bulbs don’t have different heights for high and low beam and the height doesn’t match either position in the 7951 bulb.

My understanding is that many wiring harnesses don’t use relays for the headlights or the relays are built into the fusebox. The result is significant voltage drop. Using a remote relay harness with a 12 gauge power wire makes a big difference.

Hoping others can shed some light on the topic (pun intended)

Randy, I was told by Daniel Stern lighting that you can buy an H4 halogen-based bulb (burner) on an H2 base that allows direct fitment into the GT light fixture, thus retaining the original optics but adding far more lighting power. Do not believe this change requires a wiring or relay change. Did not ask him about LEDs as I was not interested in that look.

I was hoping for LED to reduce electrical load, but seems that is not an option. Might as well go for better lighting.

Have you looked at HID technology?
A few U.K. cars had this conversion and it was a hughe increase in light over the incandescent bulbs

HID would be good. Not as power hungry as Halogen, yet brighter. Unfortunately, not able to find HID bulbs with the P45t-38 base (also referred to as R2 or S13). If using an H2 conversion it seems likely they won’t work well with enclosure geometry.

I wonder of these LED lights will work. They look like they replicate the form factor of the Hella 7951s. No idea if they are any good.

if go with hid are the rules in UK that a headlight washer is required ?

The big one was level adjustment but that is done on the suspension and rake of the car

Washer - keep a chamois in the car (at mot time)

A number of uk cars were fitted with these and all still mot’d

extract from section 25 0f IVA Manual:

Headlamp Cleaning Systems and Levelling Devices (see Note 2) 10. Vehicles fitted with Gas Discharge (HID), or LED headlamps producing the principal dipped beam must:

a. be accompanied with evidence that the light output does not exceed 2000 lumens (see Note 5), or b. be accompanied with evidence of self-levelling (see Note 4) and be fitted with a headlamp cleaning system (see Note 3).
