Personally I was please to see the back of the Flight Engineer (FE) in my career.
They still exist while ever there are old aeroplanes such as the Classic 747 etc.
Many airlines such as Continental employed a third pilot instead of the FE.
They were forever talking themselves and their importance up but as soon as some airlines offered them the chance to become driver (airframes) they leapt at it.
No, they were a dying breed and only a very few were actually good at the job.
