Original MK II nostril panel latches ??

Hi

a customer of mine ordered a RCR 40 in MK II configuration.
We would like to hinge the nostril panel like the original cars.

I´ve heard that the original parts are Leyland Mini parts. I asked Jimmy Mac about it and there are some doubts about that.
We think it is more likely an part originated in US because most of the MK II s where build by Shelby and Holman&Moody.

Anyone out there with deeper knowledge and may be source ?

Thanks

Tom,
I decided to use Mini hinges on my car as they were readily available and do look close to some seen in pictures. I very much doubt they were the exact part used on the original cars.

In looking around various car shows the only other types of hinges that seemed correct are those found on various Triumph TR models.

I recently noticed that Europa were selling something similar for Cobras and this did make me think if this was what was used. See link below.

Image at the following link is one of the clearest 1966 pictures I have seen, most race images don't show the hinges up that well.

I would also be interested to see if anyone knows the exact correct part.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the quick reply

Here are some better pics ( does it look familiar ?)

the triumph hinges have a more triangular section shape. The MK II are more rectangular and sqare in shape. Don´t you think ?

any idea what the originals are. Besides the shape the repros aer majorly available in chrome finish. We are not going to built a hot rod, so no chrome.

Chrome is only a coating Tom and can be removed. I am trying to cast my mind back over all the cars I've come in contact with in the 60's.. It does look strangely familiar...

I'll have cast about. I'm sure our USA friends will know if the part came from the USA, but I'm not so sure about that...

Thanks Keith,

would be great if we could find out more.

It is somehow a shame that all hardcore very original mono replica builders are focused on Mark 1 only. Wonder why ?

Tom,

I think the Mini hinges can be made to look fairly close to the hinges fitted to 1015 presently.

I will take a look through some of the images I researched when I get home as I am sure that I found some that look more like the TR ones in shape. I guess this is another part where different hinges may have been used on different cars based on what was available at the time they were built.

Attached image is from 1016.

Agree, the Mini and TR hinges found there way on quite a few cars and to me the Mini is closest. With a bit of creative beadblasting - I'm not sure anyone will be able to tell the difference even with a "real" one parked close by..

I searched through my various pictures and came up with the following selection. Only period shot that I have that shows the hinges in any detail is a poor one of 1015.

Rest of the shots are from 1012,1015,1016,1046,XGT-3

Based on the selection out there on original cars my view is use whatever you feel gives you the closest look.

Tom,
Here is a close-up of a NOS one
I think the streamline taper is the wrong way round to work on the MKII
