Porcelainized exhausts....

Are you guys only talking about an outer ceramic coating?

The husband of one of my employees, manages a metal coatings factory in my town. He has been talking to me about this issue and has suggested having an exhaust like that used on a GT40 slurry coated with ceramic. ie. coating the inside of the pipes to keep the heat within the system.

I know this has no effect on the outer cosmetic appearance of the exhaust, but just wondered if anyone has investigated this approach purely from the angle of protecting bodwork from excess heat?

Temperature and heat are two different things... By adding a barrier of ceramic you are changing the thermal properties of the headers.

I think this is a very astute and poignant comment. The big picture is nothing has been done to reduce the temperature source (exhaust gas temps) but the ceramic coating will impede the rate at which the exhaust system can transfer the heat with the goal of getting the exhaust clear of the engine bay and tailpipe before too much heat transfer can occur.

I'd be interested in seeing Cliff's findings pre- and post-coating.

The build of the motor concerned will dictate the EGT, the function of the coating in Cliffs case would be to reduce the RADIANT heat in the engine bay to prevent damage to other components. Another function of the coating is to contain the EGT within the exhaust system and in doing so maintain the gas speed in the system ( as the exhaust gas cools it lose's volume & speed ). The higher gas speed improves the signal at the collecter and helps the extraction effect in the other cyls. I hope thats clear but I have got to go now.
