Porsche G50 Gearbox

Hi, I spoke to a gentleman from the uk at the 2010 Classic Lemans event who had recently built a GT40 using a Porsche G50 gear box. He mentioned the use of a non Porsche clutch plate which I think was from a Rover SDi ???. Can anyone confirm this, if so what exact model of Rover / part / product code etc, otherwise any alternative clutch plate etc. Cheers,
Ramon911.

Hi Ramon,

My GT40 has a Porsche 930 box mated to a 302 block via a custom made 302 bellhousing. This allows me to run a full size Ford clutch and flywheel. The only modification required to the clutch was to replace the centre spline of the friction plate to match the Porsche first motion shaft.
You can check out my build thread for some photos and more details.
This set up also allows you to place the starter motor in the original Ford position facing towards the front of the car rather than the Porsche starter position which is a very tight fit through the horseshoe facing rearwards, so there are a few advantages.
Hope this helps as another alternative.

Hi Martin,
Thank you for your response, the porsche 930 gearbox you have fitted I assume is the 4 speed unit ?. The G50 box was fitted to the later 930's (911 turbo's of 1987 - 89).

I am a little confused. Why would you not use the Porsche sized clutch, or a suitable aftermarket?

Cost, replaceability. All of the P-components carry an exorbitant pricetag along with all their other shortcomings. ;) How much is a brand worth to you? (Nevermind...I already know, as you sell P-components for a living.)

Erik,

Porsche components will fit fine but to mate a Porsche 930 box to a 302 for a GT40, you need an adaptor plate and some meat cut from the front of the Porsche bellhousing. For a GT40, to me, that looks a bit untidy. The custom bellhousing makes it look more authentic with the added benefit you can use stock Ford parts. This means you can use a full size flywheel and clutch assemblies. Porsche stuff is smaller and a lot more expensive.
The biggest benefit is the direction of the starter motor.
The space going back into the horseshoe is minimal. It's also not easy to gain access for maintenance. With the starter pointing in the original direction, you can again use stock Ford parts and it's original looking and easy to remove.
