Price of a good self build

Hi, I have been a huge fan of the GT40 since I saw one at GoodWood festival of speed a few years ago. Now I’m hoping that I can afford to build my own replica. I was just wondering what sort of price I am looking at to build a good quality car with around 400 BHP. Also what donor car is used and can you suggest any good companies to supply the kit. Thanks very much David Toye.

David,

The most cost effective way into ownership is by buying a car already complete and registered & then re-building to your own spec.

there are several cars for sale on http://www.gt40club.clara.net/

I intended to build my own car from scratch, but got put off by the SVA test & the fact that the costs of the parts alone is more than the value of the completed car!

In the UK completed GTD's range from £20,000 upwards depending on spec. You may strike gold with a lesser cost car but that is rare. You will not build one for less than these prices. £25,000 will get you a competent car. It appears that GT40 replicas are cheaper in the UK than the US. Must be the only thing that is...

PS it is worth you considering joining the GTD40 Car Club as cars are advertised in the mags and you will learn about which bits you want and which bits you don't want. Also you will hear about events when you can come and see the cars and meet the owners and again learn about what is what! www.gtd40club.co.uk

David,

I'm building mine using gt40 body parts, that I purchased, to be placed onto a Pantera frame. My total cost will be < $15,000. It won't be gt40 suspension, but if that's all someone can afford then I say go for it.

Mine will appear as any other (MKI with snorkels) but will have underlying differences. I too have a 400+ HP engine (to be built) but, after Mark Clapp told me of his longivity, I'm thinking I'll go with a stock 302 to have it for daily driving.

Good luck with yours and have fun!

John
