R21 Gearbox setup Ideas ?

Hi Howard

On some Renault models they have a lever attached here to take the cross gate action. GTD for sum reason decided to do away with it and just use the side shaft. This is one of the reasons that gear selection is poor.

Ok guys I got the problem figured out but now guess What I can't seem to get the cover back on. Do you have to remove the shaft coming out of the end of, not the side of, the cover. Put it in place inside and then slide the cover back over it. I know about the finger going into the slots as you put the cover back on but the stuff attached to the shaft comming out the back seams to be in the way.

I am not knowledgeable enough to discuss hydroscopic or hydrophobic or even hypochondriac (?) so can't dispute anything said above. On standard GTDs the brake switch was a pressure switch in the master cylinder. With the silicon fluids they were failing on a regular basis. Once the original factory began using a non silicone fluid these occurances stopped. To save opening the system, people often converted to a mechanical switch on the brake pedal and just flushed out the silicone and used a good quality fluid instead. The silicone fluid in practice gave me a "boingy" pedal compared to regular brake fluid.
At least Howard has got to the bottom of his gearbox issues.

OK Guys, first and formost I want to thank all of you for your help. I have NEVER worked on anything French before. I would like to finish up this thread so that the next guy will be able to search for this problem and get some good info. The problem started out as: the gearbox seamed to be stuck in gear or more than likely two gears had been selected at the same time and the movement of the shifter was greatly restricted. I do not believe that this will happen to a running car but may be a problem with a gearbox rebuild or possibly after buying one used.

The gears are selected by the rods under the rear cover on these boxes. As you can see from the picture each rod has a slot cut in it. When all the slots are lined up the box is in neutral. It must be in neutral to set it up properly and when you first attach the cables to the translator assembly. The finger under the cover that is attached to the shaft that goes into the SIDE of the box must ride in the slots on the shifting rods.

Before you take the back cover off you must remove the brass round thing on the end of the rod comming out of the BACK of the cover. This was some kind of production car lever and has had the arm cut off. You remove it by driving out the roll pin. This was why I could not get the cover back on. After I took the roll pin out the clearance I needed was there. Leave the rod in the cover but allow it to slid forward as you pull the cover off.

When you fix the slot alinement and put the cover back on the track looking thing that is part of the rod coming out of the BACK of the cover must ride in the slots along with the finger that is part of the rod that comes out of the SIDE of the cover. The finger goes thru the center of the track thing.

If you have this apart all of this is very apparent.

My Gearbox works fine now.
