RBT (ZF), Quaife updates and availability

Hi,
I ordered the transmission for my Mark II (an RBT(ZF)) back in 2017. At the time the Quaife transaxle was on an indefinate hold. Recently, I have been reading posts that appear to say that a new and improved Quaife transaxle is available? Is this true? If so, what's new and improved? Is there still a long delay to actually receive either the RBT (ZF) or the Quaife?

Thanks,
/s/ Chris Kennedy

Chris,

I don’t know the history details, but the wait times seem to have been resolved. When I ordered mine last August, it was in stock and shipped immediately.

I would give them a call. The international call cost is probably worth it.

Make sure to know if your bell housing kit includes the shaft, bearings and yoke before ordering so you don’t end up with two.

I was advised not to bother with the oil cooler unless racing, and folks on this forum generally don’t recommend the Quaife for high HP racing applications. Not sure if that is based on recent data or from when there were known issues.

Cheers, Randy

From my enquiries there is a delivery lead time of about 3 months. The ZFQ is rated for up to 500bhp. From those in the UK i have spoken to who have used on track say they work just fine if you pay attention to the power rating.

Depending on who you have rebuild your zf they could be good for over 800hp. Just depends on how you drive. My last car had over 600 hp and the zf was fine, but I always double clutch on the down shifts.

Personally because of the history I would always want a ZF in the car. You just need to make sure it has been set up properly for the use.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Am I correct that the comments pertaining to wait times are for the Quaife unit? The reason I am asking is that I think I am beginning to have some issues with my RBT (ZF) second gear synchros (though I have read elsewhere that this may be a linkage adjustment issue). To date I have not been particularly enamored with the ZF.

Thanks,
/s/ Chris

I placed an order in February for my Quaife QBE62G and will be receiving it before July 4th.

My comments were only in regards to Quaife.

Hi there. I’m new to this forum and please excuse me if the pictures are not taken perfectly. I own a CAV with 427 dry sump aluminum engine with 610 hp and a Quaife transaxle. I purchased it from a gentleman who has really built it for track use and had done that without major problems.
I sometimes compete in quarter-mile events with my 1978 twin Turbo Cummins equipped Monteverdi and regrettably didn’t know about the rating of the Quaife when I participated in a quarter mile race with the GT 40 just for a father and son amusement.
The transaxle went bang when I shifted from 1st to 2nd and cracked the rear case. Now I ordered the billet upgraded version from Tom at momentum motorsports and must say that was a nice experience throughout. Responsible and fast communication and speedy delivery. Unfortunately my transmission specialist who’s been involved in many of my projects in the last 30 years is now retired and has health conditions so I’m looking for an ZF/Quaife experienced mechanic near by. Any recommendations???
My Plan B is to install an Audi 01E transmission and I have my hands on a six speed from an A6 2.7 t. Adapters and upgrades are the question for that solution.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hi:

Can you provide an email or web address for "Tom" at Momentum Motorsports (there are a number of these based on a Google search)? I am interested in learning more about the Quaife transmission.

Many thanks!

A few items: The bracket holding the insulation doesn't have a washer under the bolt head. https://www.bing.com/images/search?...AhFNn3BBewHaFt&idpbck=1&ajaxhist=0&ajaxserp=0

The bolts used are low-grade hardware store quality, the three lines on the bolt head indicate a "grade 5" rating which is fine for your wheelbarrow, but not on a high-performance automobile.

Plus, no washer under the bolt holding the insulation over the transaxle is a crime against nature for any aero/race fabricator. This makes me question the quality of the build. Not trying to be a dick, just asking what you knew about the car before the "big bang".

Hi all: I have an early ZFQ in my car (mated to an LS7 ~ 500HP). When I got the car (very low miles) one could not shift up or down without a crunch (up worse than down when double clutching). I had the unit rebuilt and upgraded to near current specs at Quaife (I could not coax out the information about what the upgrade to strengthen the box entailed in detail. I may have done the job myself.). In addition, synchros and ring and pinion were renewed - see my build log. Work was completed within about 10 weeks, just as promised in advance - merely customs issues caused extra delay. When I pointed out that the damage (excessive wear) to ring and pinion clearly was due to improper setting upon initial installation they gave me a significant discount on that part of the job. Now I'm very happy with the box. I set up the linkage and now shifts are very smooth and reasonably quick. No race track use yet, however.

Hi Chris, momentum motosports in ireland. But Tom just provided the parts, He admitted that he has little to no experiences with the Quaife transaxle. I'd rather talk to the guys at Wiaife directly.

agree on the washer, don't agree on the quality of the bolts. You don't honestly want a 12.8 to be used to secure whatever to an aluminum housing ? I bought it from a gentleman who had it being built by a reputable race shop in Hamburg Germany and it was not used as a trailer queen or to show off in the neighborhood but was for. example on the racecourse of Oschersleben 1.5 seconds faster than the fastes lap with his 600 hp Nissan GTR. He tested several set-ups regarding the exhaust and must have forgotten the washer.
