Renault gearbox info required, please!

I'm considering buying a renault 21 Turbo 'box to replace the renault 30 'box I currently have in my GTD & would appreciate anyone who could answer a couple of queries.

On looking at some gear rato charts it appears the only different ration is the final drive. Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

Does the 21 turbo 'box have the same mounting points and casing? I'm considering making new mountings & a rod change & wondered if they fit the Renault 30 'box, would they also fit the 21 Turbo?

Has anyone got a 21 Turbo 'box for sale?

Any information greatly appreciated.

Julian,

I have a ctc in Belgium wich is a retired Renault Alpine garage and the guy has a zillion of original and second hand Renault pieces at very attractive prices.
He has some new and SH gearboxes that certainly will adress your question.
Let me know if you are interested and I can help yout out overhere if needed.
His name is Beny Rapers (+32 11 68 31 39).The garage is at a place called St Truiden in Belgium.
Good luck.

Julian, The renault 30 tx box is almost identical in the casing layout to a Ren21t. The diffrence is the rear casing. The gear change cross shaft which on a ren30 is 16mm and is a single lever. On the ren21t and ren25t there are two lever out the back. We normally only use one, the cross shaft. This on a ren21t is 18mm reduced modified shaft supplied by us. If you were to make a rod change for the ren30 box be sure you can adapt it to suit both shafts. The casing isthe same dimensionally. The gearbox mounts you have will fit both gearboxes but you will have to enlarge one hole in the right hand mount to 10mm. Other than that they are very similar. The ren30 V6 bellhousing you have now will be required to fit to the front of the Ren21t gearbox as I have already posted elsewhere the reason. GTD made the ren30 gearbox fit thier adaptor plate originally. The re21t although has better rations and diff, It wasnt around in 1985. The bellhousing on the r21t is samller and a different bolt pattern anyway. the ren 30 bellhousing bolt straight on the r21t box with a fresh gasket and two mods. i can talk you through it if your stuck.

I have r21t gearboxes on the shelf and can modify it for you if required. they are getting very rare now. E mail or phone me if you require further info or details.

best regards

Dave,

Thanks for posting that, I've picked out the 21T 'box & the '30;

Model Part No. Ist 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Rev Diff

21Turbo UN1-013 3.36 2.05 1.38 1.03 0.82 3.54 3.44

30TS 369-01/06/014 3.36 2.05 1.38 1.06 0.82 3.55 3.89

So the only difference in ratios is 3rd gear (marginal) & more importantly the final drive.. interesting!!

I guess I have a 30TS (Final drive 3.89). Can it be changed to 3.44? I have P335X35X17 rear tires. would the change make a noticable difference?

How hard/easy is it to do it!

Farhad, I think yopu probably have a 369 with a 3:89 diff. The best expert I know of is Mark Sibley. He has done a lot of fiddling with ratios for Renault boxes. As far as I know you can convert to a 3:44 diff. You can also add limited slip and install aftermarket 1st and 2nd gears and a more overdrive 5th. Cost is another matter. However I think Mark can tell you availability and cost for all of this.

If you have an engine that revs upto say 6000 RPM, then the difference just from the final drive ratio would be 236.3km/h (3.89) compared to 267.2 (3.44).

I have written an excel program for it if you want to experiment. I can e-mail it.

Bill.

My tag on the box says >< U N 1 the first thing looks like a side ways X. It also has two hand scribed numbers on it 505 and 473 I think these might be inspection IDs. Any ideas?
