The Vth Test. The finale. The Showdown.

I guess we'll start early for this one so the banter can begin.
It has to have been one of the better years with a lot of interest
here in the UK. The Test match scores are often in front of any other news here in the UK and the Test at the Oval will no doubt be the same.
So - let the sniping commence.................

I can't tell you how much I am looking forward too / dreading the final test of this ashes series. Time for a little bit a backbone to be shown by one or two or eleven of the England team. Which ever way it goes, lets hope it's a nail biter

Pete,
How about a case of champagne or a couple of bottles of Barolo as a wager then ?
I cannot think that it could ever be drawn but stranger things happen.

Nothing crazy - I'm tired of that Brut stuff after working in BA so just an average champagne suitable for 'hand to hand combat'.

Tickets for Vth Test for Saturday. Probably going to be about £175 per ticket. Please let me know asap if you are interested. I think there may also be some for Sunday but I can't do it on Sunday.
Weather Outlook: Rain with intermittent showers over the southern England from Thursday until Saturday, and brighter from Sunday into Monday

Don't worry about Sunday David, it will be all over by then with the Aussies trying to be humble about their magnificent victory!
Have you bought the champers yet?

Well, my eldest daughter Sarah has cut short her duties in Delhi to return on Wednesday to LHR to attend the Oval. I have been talked into Monday as well
as well as Saturday so I trust your prognosis is wrong. If we win Pete - I will be anything but humble - but you knew that anyway............

David I think I said the Aussies would try to be humble. You and I know that wont happen.
Good to see that Sarah is a cricket fan, you have obviously educated her exceptionally well.

Warnie has a whinge about the Umpires, and I agree! But not about the 20/20 game.

Former Australian Test leg-spinner Shane Warne has taken a swipe at some of cricket's leading umpires and described the level of officiating in the game as hitting its lowest point in two decades.
Releasing his plan for the future of the game, Warne said umpire salaries should be increased while he criticised South African official Rudi Koertzen, flamboyant New Zealander Billy Bowden and Australia's Daryl Harper.
"The standard of umpiring is as low as I've known it in 20 years," Warne wrote in his column for The Times.
"Yes, it is a difficult job and technology exposes any mistakes, but some of the performances in the Ashes series so far have been pretty ordinary.
"Players will accept that the odd bad decision gets through now and again. At the moment, there are just too many."
Of the present panel, Warne said Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf was "pretty good" and Australia's Simon Taufel "isn't bad".
"Rudi Koertzen has been a good umpire, but unfortunately his time has passed," Warne added of the South African, who has made some controversial decisions during the current Test series between Australia and England.
"Billy Bowden is inconsistent, which we saw at Headingley. I think Billy can be very good, but sometimes he gets a bit carried away.
"Talking to players and having a friendly nature is imperative, not the `I'm the boss' schoolteacher approach of Daryl Harper - who is unpopular with players - and the attitude that they never make an error. Billy is another who cannot admit a mistake."
Warne believes umpires should be fast-tracked to the top level, where salaries should rise from about $100,000 to nearly three times that amount on a retainer and match-fee basis.
But he was against the use of technology for anything but line decisions unless the gadgets were foolproof or an umpire made a glaring mistake.
"In that case the third umpire should get on the walkie-talkie and tell his mate in the middle to change his decision," he said.
Warne, a vocal supporter of the Twenty20 format, also called for an end to one-day internationals.
"This is a big call, but cricket evolves and the 50-over game has passed its sell-by date," he said.
"It's amazing to think that after the Ashes series England and Australia play seven one-day games, which take about a month.
"Sorry, but that's just greed on the part of administrators. From now on, we should be playing Tests and Twenty20 internationals, with a Twenty20 World Cup every two years."
He also reckons batsmen should be banned from switch-hitting.
"If switch-hitting cannot be banned, then the leg-before ruling must be tweaked so that a batsman changing his stance has a second off stump," Warne said.

Going to be an interesting day today. I'm still not sure what a good total is on this pitch. Will be interesting to see if the English bowlers can stay on target and if so, how the Aussies get on. I'm excited.

It looked as though the surface was 'puffing' up yesterday and it should really be a nightmare scenario if this continues. I'm not quite sure about the rules that will prevent any restoration overnight unless both Captains and the umpires are in total agreement. I think it will apply here for this test.
It's not even watered unless it is affected by rain before the covers go on. The pitch is a bit like the ball really - hallowed and treated with reverence.
Today is going to be a bit more overcast and possible rain. With the surface degrading it may bring more advantage to seam and swing (both in and out) because so far we haven't seen any real bounce from the Australian pace bowling. The big test of today is how long the remainder of the England batsmen remain and then how quickly the Australian batsmen fall - but it's a new day today so lets get on with the rest of this match. Harmisons batting may well prove a critical innings. I've a funny feeling it's going to end up a bit like a one day limited over match on Monday....................

The nightmare scenario has started. I just heard Jason Gillespie uttering "This Sucks" !
My biggest fear at the moment? ......... There wont be any play on Monday.
They (the commentary team) think it might be over by then.
A bit of a let down really. Lets hope for some last ditch stands and try to make a contest of this sad innings from the tourists.
Pete - I could go on gloating all day. In fact every time I've got out of my chair to try and do something , like open another beer, visit the toilet, strech my legs - something gets worse for the Aussies.
