Cliff I would agree with you, and the G50.52 would not be the ideal gearbox in my opinion, however there are times when you can find one of these at a pretty decent price. Given the weight that this car is likely to not have, it may be up to the task, if driven properly. It has essentially the same incredibly strong mainshaft and oversized ring and pinion that the later generation gearboxes are using today. It is shaft shifted though which is something that I don't personally like, as getting the shift linkage to be perfect can be more than a bit of a pain.
