Wheel single central nut / spinners - correct tightening direction

Hi guys, apologies if this has been done to death already but I’d like to start with a clean slate as I am getting conflicting advice from various ‘experts.’

what is the correct direction of tightening for the single central wheel nuts / spinners?

Is there a right and wrong way or is it a grey area ?

Talking about road use mainly.

 

Clockwise to tighten on the left-hand side of the car; anti-clockwise on the right; or if a spinner, knock the top ear towards the rear of the car.
