Hi Mike, the accident in 68 of the car was very hard, but the body was not destroyed. But its looks harder than it was, because the car was the first car to have a monocoque. So the power of the energy hits away the outer body parts like a formula one.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I wasn't suggesting that the main part of the car's body was destroyed. I was only talking about the fiberglass front and rear clips--I suppose it would have been clearer if I said 'bodywork'. In your crash photos, they are very badly damaged, and I can't imagine that you reused them.

That's what I was wondering--where your front and rear clips came from? There are so many companies making GT40 bodies today....

I'm glad to see another genuine GT40 back on the track!

Chris, thanks for sharing. The 35kg could easily come from the wheels and tires and the repair body parts that are probably heavier than the original race body parts.

Chris,

I have just read this thread and must thank you for sharing these photos and information with us, your passion for 1079 is evident. I for one would love to see some further pictures of the restoration.

Regards

Fantastic story Chris - thanks for posting.

I maybe a little stupid but could you explain this for me?

" But its looks harder than it was, because the car was the first car to have a monocoque. So the power of the energy hits away the outer body parts like a formula one."

Did you mean the GT40 model was the first monocoque car generally speaking or did you mean 1079 was first monocoque car?

I'm sure you meant GT40 model period... :)

PS if you re-used 70% of that body, your bodywork guy must have been a genius and perhaps why it's heavier now than then...

Hi, surely i menat the period. The damges often looked heavier than they were. The original parts were repaired with a lot of primer. We have stripped the car in this winter fully and the ody is iceblusted and the electrical wires are changed. We hope that the weight went down on 920 Kg.
The lemans weight paper of this car is exactly 900 kg. But the car has had the guerney eagle alloy heads. But now the car has the 65 specification with the smaller brakes and the smaller rims. The car is a real john wyer car with a roll cage fitted in the roof. This 3 cars were all a bit heavier but the 900kg from lemans are a proffed document. So we will search again pound for pound;) Perhaps i should go to the weightwatcher by myself to lose the last kilos!!!
I will send today pictures of the last state.
The car will start at Tour Auto this year and Lemans Classic, Eifelrennen, Oldtimer Grand Prix and Spa Summer Festival and Spa 6 hours. Perhaps we will get an invitation to goodwood.

1079 last state of winter work.

Chris, Good Luck for 2010. I too have a yellow GT40 so its nice to see another. Sadly, mine is not an original such as yours. What a bloody spectacular restoration on the car! You must have the patience of a saint to endure a complete overhaul such as this one. Enjoy her and drive it like you stole it!!

Very nice Chris - absolutely beautiful. Great to see such a historic race car being carefully tended to, and driven as she was meant to be! Thank you for sharing the pics and information.

Nice pics, however..in winter works 2 aren't the first 4 pics of a Porsche engine...not the GT40? The carnk looked odd and as I examined the other pics they resemble a Porsche and are definitely not a Ford V8

Sorry about that, the first pictures are from my Porsche 935 K3!

Chris,
Thanks for sharing this wonderful bit of history. As far as the weight difference from the original is it possible that the tires you have on it now are a slightly different internal construction than in 1968? That may account for some of the difference.
Thanks again!

Nice vid! Thanks.

Would you have a picture of the front section of the car, where the stearing column pass? A picture of the pael, without the stearing rack?

Thanks

Olivier.
