AutoWeek P1040/Sbarro Fiasco

Has anyone had a look at the new AutoWeek magazine? It has a long (for AutoWeek) article on P1040, the original owner, and the Sbarro "recreation" that showed up at the Paris auction recently. It has long been known that Sbarro has had a shady past, but this seems to put it flatly out in the open and is fairly condeming. I've heard this isn't the only GT40 he's done this with, and, other cars such as Lolas are heavily affected too. I'll see if I can round up that article on line.

Sorry to bring this back up, I think it was mentioned on another thread (the auction) but not the article. The article has pictures of a Sbarro chassis and a couple of original chassis to show detail differences.

Well, there it is. Way to go Autoweek...rockonsmile

Despite the persistent fog around certain famous cars re-built with authentic and historical components and each, in their own way "original" or "part original" it does kinda look like FS esq has made a monkey out of several unfortunate collectors.

Interesting that the FIA are now getting involved with their Historical Passports etc, although even to get an HP for a deliberate "clone" is some kind of official recognition.

The new FIA rules will surely allow some forum members who are chasing extreme originality with their replicas to gain these Passports, yes? (But not, I hasten to add with any intention to defraud but for recognition of historical accuracy). This will tend to give some provenance to such replicas maybe and thus enhance their value perhaps?? especially those who are replicating the monocoque steel chassis at some considerable labour and expense. ;)

Whaddya reckon?

So that is two fairly cut and dried cases of this guy committing fraud and probably a lot of other things? Since this is coming out (and been know about for years) will their be any retribution against Sbarro? The folks that have been duped simply have a replica, a nice one, but I bet no better, and probably worse, than the forthcoming Superformance cars.

Sounds like of you take your car to him you don't get your car back. I wonder if it works the other way - take him my Gurney RCR Lola Spider and get the real one back??

Got a feeling it doesn't work that way.

Maybe this is just a housekeeping issue and he is merely getting stuff mixed up on the shelf?

Might be an idea to commision Sbarro to work on your replica.........Maybe even drive away in a million dollar car, or at least parts of one.....!!!!

sbarro

He's been at this a long time; evidently getting sued and losing didn't discourage him. The auction house should have been a lot more careful- anyone who's done any GT40 research, just scratching the surface, would have heard of Sbarro and the trouble he's made in the past. did the car actually sell? If so, someone got screwed. They paid a big price for a car that is likely not to be eligible for anything, and the only folks who will do well out of this are the lawyers. It's a shame.
