How close is your steering wheel to the dashboard?

I've seen cars with just enough room to get a finger between the dash and wheel as well as some that are several inches away. What sort of distance is standard/comfortable on most cars?
Thanks
Simon

I know for myself - I will place the wheel where it's the most comfortable.
I do have a removable wheel...

In order to clear my legs it' as high as possible

Still would like to mod it further to lift it higher as the wheel partly obscures the dials.

Well that comes from driving with my head at roof height

To set the position of your steering wheel I would suggest that you set your seat position correctly for the legs to the pedals distance. Then have the steering wheel in such a position so that with an outstretched arm your wrist is resting on top of the wheel. Then when you are holding the wheel you will have a slight bend in your arm so that you get good movement when you go from lock to lock. This should also lead you to a comforable position as suggested above. The best position is one where you are comfortable and in control of your vehicle at all times.

I also have a removable wheel, and I agree with Malcolm on the wheel position as that is where I positioned mine.
I can tell you that the back of the steering wheel is approx 7 1/2" from the pointed part of the dash where switches mount. I am 5' 9" and for me that is a good fit. As far as wheel height my column is very close to the top point on the cutaway below the tach and there is plenty of room for my legs, and entry and exit from the car. My column is rather simple, a 1 1/2" aluminum tube with bearings at both ends, and a tubular cover where the column passes thru the dash, so the center would be 1" below the cutaway in the dash, I am using a 13" diam. wheel.
Cheers
