They are opposing statements true, but they do not meet the basic rules of irony I'm afraid in my opinion.

However, it is a prime and classic example of a politician talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Fox News? :laugh:
 
It is possible for two seemingly opposed statements to be valid. (Opinion on subjects withheld and I am assuming that both are quotes - perhaps naively.)

Here are two simple proverbs that can both be true (depending on situation) but seem opposed:
Many hands make light work;
Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Both have their place.

Sometimes I find situational comparisons on this forum mind blowing.

BTW there is an irony here but it won't be me that points it out. ;)
