Transaxle painted?

Seen in a photo of the #1032 restoration that the transaxle appears to be painted a battleship grey. Is that period correct?

Most of the T-44 transaxles I have seen photos of that have been painted are usually black.

What should it look like Graham? Bare casting, black, etc.?

T 44 s are Magnesium, so they will be black chromate finish

Trans and bellhousings were bare originally.
We painted 1032 in an attempt to stop the corrosion.
The grey probably wasn't the best choice...
