Chris's AK GT40 Build

Figured I’d start this GT40 build thread now that things are actually moving – I’ve got the chassis, panels, and some suspension parts sitting in the garage, so it finally feels real. The plan is to build it more as a grand tourer than an all-out race car. Progress won’t be overnight, but I’ll post updates as parts come in and the car starts to take shape.

make sure you ream out all the suspension mounting holes before fitting panels ( lots of paint in holes )
when panels are fitted its impossible to access certain holes

My spider from AK arrived almost completely de-laminated between the upper and lower halves and had a permanent twist in it. Carefully inspect all parts.

Hi Chris.
Enjoy your build. There is lots to do!
I'm about a year into to my AK build.
I agree with Jerry's advice.
What is your choice of engine/gearbox? Looks like a RHD 302 chassis.

Rob

If you don’t think the spider is up to scratch, just ring John and ask him to rectify it ,give him a chance to do that at least

That did occur, they did not resolve it. The solution was the inject the cracks with resin. I scrapped the spider, it had to be cut up so much to make everything align. I ended up finding a complete metal roof for 2K.

Thanks Jerry, I've just tried to do that, although the weird thing is that even though the supplied bolts are all 1/2" some of the holes seem to be 12mm

yep RHD 302, and I think I'll probably go with the quiffe gearbox

Hi Chris

Good to see you are off the mark at last. I would use a Quaife box myself though! Not sure at what BHP a quiffe box would quibble! :p

The suspension mounting holes are all "clean" of paint now and I've verified that the bolts actually fit (although I had to buy an imperial size drill bit as all mine are metric!!!) plus I've got the first few panels fitting with some cavity wax sprayed into all the holes.

Also because this isn't a race car I'm insulating it as much as possible to make it as comfortable, I've got some Class 0 closed cell insulation to put everywhere it will fit!!

I have chosen the Quaife ZFQ. As you have the 302 chassis (like me), the engine mount points on the chassis assume a UN1 gearbox. In order to get the driveshaft outputs on the Quaife transaxle to line up with the rear hubs, you'll need to move the engine forward a little (around 40-50mm). Easy enough to do but, as any GT40 owner will tell you, there isn't much room in front of the engine anyway!

Looking good. I did not even start panels till about a year after getting the chassis because of all the alterations I made to my chassis.

yes looking through your thread I'm worried that maybe I SHOULD be making alterations
If you are using a SBF/Quaife and not using the type of radiator that AK uses there are really no reasons to change things. I had to widen and lenghten the front of the engine bay for the Modular dohc engine.

I caused many of my headaches by my choices of wanting a different car from everyone else.

I'm not overly happy with some of the gaps between the (provided) panels, do you guys use seam sealer to tidy it up?
