Congratulations Ron Earp

A big congratulations to Ron for his efforts at the Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge held baclk on July 22nd at VIR. This maybe old news to some but this challenge was put on by Grassroots Motorsports, and it was seeking the fastest cars that were not restricted in anyway to get sub 2 minute runs at VIR. They used the NASA time trial format and safety rules. Other than that it was a "run what you brung" type of event. No restictions on HP, turbos, weight reduction, suspension mods, wings, etc.
The rollout video of the event, shows Ron's T70 rolling out of the garage in the first few seconds of the video. Click on the arrows at the bottom right of the screen to get a full screen view.
2011 Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge presented by Grassroots Motorsports: Grassroots Motorsports Magazine
In this month's edition of Grassroots Motorsports, Ron is spotted as the 50th fastest car there with a time of 2:16.575. To give you a perspective, the fastest was Tony Ave in a Riley MkXXII @1:48.939. Second was Reese Cox of MTI Racing in his Corvette @1:54.958. Reese is out of Marietta Ga. and did some of the early suspension work on my GT40. This event was put on during one of the hottest days around, with a heat index of 115!
The time span between the second leading time and Ron's time was just 21.617 seconds. Quite outstanding. This gives you an idea of the company Ron is keeping at VIR.
If you want to see the course at speed, stay on the full screen video mode after the first video, and click on the bottom right video of the yellow Mustang of Janson Bowles(1:55.372) at the challenge. He was 3rd fastest and will give you an idea of the speeds and challenges of the course. It makes some of our GT40 videos look down right slow.
Again congratulations Ron!!

Very nice Ron, well done! Old school Can-Am Challenge iron sticking it to these young upstarts! Look forward to hearing about your next track outing.

Well, thanks fellows but 21 seconds at VIR is a ton and 2:14/2:16 (the fastest we've run the car) is only barely faster than my old Z. On the other hand, we built the car to have endurance and it doesn't have much horsepower compared to the other UTCC cars. I suspect our 225 whp in that heat was in the bottom five or so for power.

Next track outing is in less than two weeks - the VIR 13 Hour Enduro. Come hell or high water we're going to run it this year and check that box off.
