Ron you are correct, A very nice 300hp 302 can be built for 3000 easy. If you wanted to use a take out 5.0 motor from say a mustang and simply add a nice cam, intake, and 650 holley you could have a very nice streetable motor for far less than that. I am sure there are thousands of them around the USA. I know you guys overseas are hurting for cheep 50k mile 302's but then you got the cars over there don't ya.
Reground cams can be done for 80 bucks that will work with the stock valve train and a simple single point dist. can be recurved for next to nothing. All in all a very fast car can be built with much less than what we talk about on this forum.
IMHO $20,000 spent on chassis, brakes, and gearbox will result in faster lap times than a 20K motor in a unsorted car.
My personal view would be to spend the money on a gearbox with the proper gearing and LSD, and brakes. Then sort out the suspension and see how fast you are going at a few track days. I think you would be very happy with the results. Adding power later is just a matter of more money, sorting out a chassis yourself is where the real hobbie starts and the checkwriters stop. I hope I didn't insult a few rich guys, none was intended.
