First I have heard or them. With funding from Bill Gates and other venture capitalist, the goal of 100mpg goes on. With the idea of "power denisty" the former Volkswagen engineers continue to push their OPOCE(Oposed Piston, Oposed Cylinder Engine). The engine is assisted with an electrically driven turbocharger and 4 to 2 cylinder technology may well get them there. The engine can run on gas, diesel, or ethanol. Check them out. Very innovative and forward thinking.
Hmm... sure looks interesting! But, its a ported engine; someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't ported engines inherently less efficient than poppet valves? Plus, you are not able to control the valve timing. This design also seems to lend itself to being a diesel and reminds me of this engine: Fairbanks-Morse 38D8 Diesel Engine
